A link to the article/his blog/his deviant art He's simply great at having a balance between the superhero costume, realism, respect of the sexes - and simply making them look good. Give his Avengers (fan art) designs a look.!
I still have a little eyebrow to raise re: cut-out parity but these costumes are so good and such an improvement I can't even be bothered to at the moment.
Holy crap, favorite Psylocke costume in... forever. This might mean I'll be able to read a book with Psylocke in it without her ass constantly being in my face, which would be nice.
Hell, I'm thinking of picking this up because of the costumes alone.
What's the deal with the female version of Fantomex? Did he become a she or is she an alternate reality version (or are these ALL alternate reality versions)?
If Cap's new costume is the one I've seen in panels from Consequences this week, I don't know what they're thinking. It's the more overly complicated and fussy costume he's ever had, and it's like, the most transparent attempt to make him look like Movie!Cap.
Although Marvel made the dunderheaded move - IMO, of course - of replacing the awesome Extremis-era armour for Iron Man with something that just wasn't as pleasing to the eye. Even though Tony's armour in the movies is basically Granov's Extremis armour with a different plate in place for the changed reactor.
This interview is magical. And it gives me hope for comics finally getting it.
We wanted [Pyslock] to be wearing something that looks like it can actually be used and beneficial in her sneaking around an enemy base where she doesn't risk the chance of falling out of it at any given moment, let alone a fight.
And
I'm not one that agrees with the notion that every female character has to be "sexy." It needs to serve a purpose.
I already like the new costumes and this is just like icing on the top. I think I may have to keep an eye out for other things Kris Anka does.
I think it's somehow a given that nearly any mainstream female character in a comic will end up being perceived as 'sexy' by someone, but I think some designers in particular are finally starting to understand that 'sexiness' does not particularly equal 'exposed flesh' or 'fetishy costumes'.
Hell, it's either that or Disney are somehow starting to put pressure on Marvel to make the costumes a bit more covering, but I doubt that very much. But these are definitely a step forward, and it's telling that the only one with a kinda provocative transparent costume used to work for a guy like Mojo.
Definitely loving that--plus it's not like they're wearing potato sacks. Those costumes are very form-fitting and flattering to their figures (I'm sure if I were into older, short guys, Puck there would look pretty damn hot too), so it's not like we can't see that they have very toned, athletic, sexy bodies.
Plus, as someone who enjoys and tries to do pin-up art, I find the fact that their regular costume has more fabric/covers more works even better, because it gives you more to do and having less skin exposed makes the fact that your subject IS exposing more all the sexier.
Yeah. Again, as darkknightjrk has pointed out, it's not like these are potato sacks. They're still clearly sexy women in form-fitting uniforms, but I think these just generally work a million times better than the standard swimsuit-style costumes which are just asking to be drawn in incredibly uncomfortable ways - and it doesn't even take a Liefeld to do so.
I mean, it's just the refusal, here, to go along with some standard design elements, too - like those grey strips on Betsy's outer thighs or the 'X' across her chest - I think in the mind of a lesser artist, it would be so easy to just make that exposed flesh. So I think the designer really does deserve some kudos just for breaking from that tired old routine.
How so? They're more black-ops or whatever than most of the previous X-Force teams combined, and as much as I probably appreciated it between the ages of 13 to 16, I really don't want another twenty years of Betsy Braddock having her ass hanging out, somehow.
I almost agree but only from the POV of an artist that looks at it and goes "Oh god there's so many superfluous lines and shit." They look good at turn arounds but I wouldn't want to have to draw some of those hundreds of times an issue.
I mean, as artist looking at this - these lines are *so* easy to get a handle of, sure you're definitely gonna have to reference when illustrating the comic (any decent artist should), and Bishops will need simplifying for those who can't (or won't), but since they're straight lines it's fine.
I wouldn't even call them superfluous - they help make the clothes look like clothes, and the uniforms look like actual uniforms - not flat pieces that look like they were printed then painted on.
Oh what you mean the fun part? Well they are superheroes -- they serve the purpose of individuality, recognizability, etc etc. Making the costumes more unique.
If you really couldn't remember - that's (lady) Fantomex you're talking about and LE GASP! Artists have had no trouble drawing those lines for the ten years he's (now, she's) been floating around. The transparencies on the Spiral are of intermediate difficulty, i see the holes on the top of the boots being removed by most artists, but if you're getting your moneys worth from the artist, don't worry they'll handle it fine.
This isn't animation, were talking sequential, but static art.
I think they'd all be pretty easy (and fun) to draw, except Femonex's coat which fills me with fear of my imortal enemy TANGENTS. I think the zigzags on the coat and the zigzags on the suit should have had more differentiation, like being different sizes or maybe reversed colours?
Fair enough, I haven't tried to draw him, but I know you can get away with being 'expressive' with the lines, they don't have to be 100% accurate just in perspective to however he's moving.
But the costumes only difference is that it's being worn by a woman I think. The lines have always been there no? Well since X force anyway - most artists seem to tackle them just fine.
I'm just amused by the picture of Spiral from the back, where he just kinda stopped drawing her extra arms at some point. It's like he went, "Even I don't know how her shoulders are supposed to work with six arms."
Looking closely at it, she seems to have bare shoulders/shoulderblades - they're in a slightly pinker tone than the areas in grey that are transparent. I think for the purposes of the turnaround, he's basically saying 'her arms have to go *here*', which is why he leaves it blank so an artist like Garney can see it and can't mess it up.
Outside of wanting to see Puck sing "Smooth Criminal," I'm liking all of these. Storm's is drool worthy, and it's so refreshing to see female characters without breasts the size of their heads.
I've only read one Fantomex storyline, like seven years ago, and yet my first thought on seeing #2 here was "Hey, is that a female version of Fanto-whats-his-name?" That's a very good sign.

Kris Anka's Captain America design is so much better then the one they went with

Also he simplifies the New 52's Costume designs into something palatable. His Superman is top notch.
