Mod Post:: Decemeber Theme/Meme poll
Nov. 29th, 2012 11:07 pmGreetings oh best beloveds,
With December arriving and the year coming to a close, your ever lovable Mod Squad thought it might be nice to have a theme for next month and we thought it might be apt to give the entire community a chance for some input.
So from now until the end of Sunday 2nd December, you can vote (By replying) on the following suggestions;
Now, you can, if you wish submit your own ideas too, but that won't be voted on, because that's just too confusing to track.
However, at Mod discretion, whilst we will go if we can for the popular vote, should someone produce a suggestion so awe-inspiring that women will swoon and men will weep spontaneously upon merely reading it, then we reserve the right to go for that one instead.
So think over the stories you could contribute, and/or would like to see, and vote away!

Date: 2012-11-29 11:39 pm (UTC)(Secretly, I was hoping that "The End of the World" would be an option, since the world is supposed to end in December, isn't it?)

Date: 2012-12-01 08:37 pm (UTC)The Mayan calendar wasn't just our modern day calendar without leap years. Actually, there wasn't just one calendar, there were three. One measured solar cycle, and one lunar cycle. Then there was the Calendar Round, which gave a date based on both the lunar and solar calendars, which had the benefit of producing 52 years worth of distinct dates. None of these matter as far as the 2012 Doomsday scenario, except in helping explain why the Long Count existed. In order to give a date more than 52 years in the future, the Mayans had another calendar known as the Long Count.
The Long Count counts days (specifically the number of days from what the Mayan's figured to be the date of creation), and wasn't particularly tied to any lunar or solar cycle. It was however, divided into units. The largest one that's come up so far is the baktun (or b'ak'tun). We're currently in the thirteenth baktun, which will end on December 21, 2012. This much is not really up for argument, it's how the Mayan's reckoned time.
All that being said, no, the world's not ending, at least not according the the Mayans. It'd just be time to flip over a page in the metaphorical calendar, moving into the fourteenth baktun. It might also be cause for a big blow-out New Year's party. Predictions of the end of the world are based on very questionable interpretation of Mayan myths concerning previous world ages or possibly previous worlds.
