Shameless Self-Promotion and Hal Jordan

I've started a blog to document my attempt to recreate my once great comic collection but I've limited myself to shopping from the quarter bin. Recently I covered Adventure Comics #459 which features a typical Hal Jordan Green Lantern story.





Now you may ask why is test pilot Hal Jordan driving a truck? Well if memory serves in the 70s Hal became a truck driver for a long stretch of time, perhaps because of the trucking craze that also gave us Smokey and the Bandit.

So being a 70s Green Lantern story that starts with Hal encountering an alien woman, you know the rest of the "plot" is all just filler to get to this.

Did we have a Marvel/DC cross-over around this time? Hal could've raced US 1!

Given the difference in hair style and both hair and skin colour, may we assume they're actually two different aliens?

Nope, she was using some kind of technological illusion because she feared if Hal saw her true form he would be repulsed. Obviously she doesn't know Hal.

She reminds me of the GL with antenna in the GL Corp book that teams with Guy on the black-ops 'GL Corpse' mission.

This still doesn't make sense. Why is a Lantern Corps member wasting time driving a truck?!

To keep it real with the human folks at a guess.

Plus, he wants to retain a life of his own, and since the GL Corps doesn't actually pay.. well, ANYTHING (I think you;d get free flights, but you can't use the ring for personal gain), he needs to provide for himself somehow.

Man I'd totally forgotten Hal's truck driving days. One of the first comics I ever read was a Green Lantern/Green Arrow book that had truck driver Hal in it. He'd just pop the truck into a big green bubble and put it into orbit whenever he needed to take off as GL.
