The conclusion of the storyline that ended the first volume of Justice League of America, before it was rebooted as the hilarious Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League International.

The issue opens with Professor Ivo:

And it's obvious he's bat-shit crazy!

Meanwhile Vixen has discovered Ivo's hideout and breaks into it alone. The professor advises her to give up and politely offers her a drink:

J'onn totally destroys all the androids and Vixen goes after Ivo. She kills him, but it's just another android:

The real Ivo had become so mentally disturbed, his creations felt embarrassed by him and locked him up in a padded cell. What a nice twist.

Vixen and J'onn return to the JLA HQ, where they say goodbye as the team is officially over.

And then Batman punched Guy Gardner and a bright new age started!

It's a little sad, given her reasons for leaving the JLA, that Vixen's next team, which she joined sort of reluctantly, was the Suicide Squad

Yeah, she was pretty messed up when she took that job. I haven't read this story before, but it's pretty clear where her PTSD in Suicide Squad came from. (And I wonder if she was on that book because it was also drawn by Luke McDonnell.)

I was a kid when this came out. I remember seeing ads for the reboot, and being annoyed at DC for tossing what was then the current JLA in favor of a bunch of old characters--like blowing up your ballteam to bring back a bunch of retired players.

Superhero comics are weird like that.

So not only did Ivo go utterly insane, but the android intended to mimic him gradually did as well... That is some kind of crazy.

That's a pretty neat twist, though in retrospect, one that people should have seen coming. Weird that this leads to the wacky comedy JLA though, talk about mood whiplash.

Although, to their credit, Giffen and Dematteis didn't start the Bwah-ha ha-ing right away. Sure, there were funny lines in the first issue, but there were definitely some homages to the previous run as well.

The Giffen League wasn't all wacky hijinks, really. It had some very dark episodes, just with a lot of silliness in between. Sort of like real life.

The mass destruction of androids in this arc is pretty disturbing, especially when there's so much emphasis on how complex and humanlike their minds are. Same with Doombots.
