Filling
capnduckman 's request to see Tim Hunter. This is from issue #11, part three of "The Black Room" arc.
Continuing off from issue ten, Dr. Faust gets escorted back to A.R.G.U.S. As he tells Trevor, this was all part of his plan as he wanted to get near the Black Room. Trevor initiates the security protocol, anti-kadabra, as Faust's demons overrun the A.R.G.U.S. sentry golems. (They have golems? Really? That's kinda cool.) Just then the JLD show up, Faust and Constantine bicker. Deadman possesses Trevor to get him away from all the fighting, doing some awesome acrobat moves that I'm jealous of.
While Zatanna is holding off Faust's goons, Constantine tries to force Trevor to get him into the Black Room before Faust gets there. Understandably, Trevor is hesitant to go along with this plan, so he allows it but only on one condition: Black Orchid and he have to go with Constantine. Trevor asks Dr. Mist to help him access the Black Room while Zatanna and Deadman stay behind to hold off the demons.
While on the way to the Black Room, Trevor calls all anti-occult security personnel to sub-level 13 (where I'm assuming they're all gathered trying to stop Faust).
Meanwhile...

We then get introduced to John Peril the "special government liaison and expert in paranormal investigation and occult terror prevention," (They...need an acronym or something.) as he tells Trevor that his "anti-magic squad has the Black Room secure."
Dr. Mist gets to work on lifting his magical seals from the door to the Black Room while Constantine comments that Mist needs a security upgrade as "any mystic worth his salt could walk right through this." Which I guess should've raised some flags for me, considering what happens at the end of this issue, but when I first read it, it just seemed like Constantine was being a jerk.
Peril wonders if Constantine even knows what he's looking for as we're shown a large room with...a lot of odd stuff really, like a giant penny in a corner, dinosaur skeletons and an ancient Greek boat hanging from the ceiling, a weird granite statue, and boxes upon boxes labeled "storage". It looks more like a cluttered warehouse of storage stuff than anything mystical really, but I guess it's not so important what the Black Room looks like so much as *what's* in it.

We return to Deadman and Zatanna getting overtaken by the demons, and then Faust sends Deadman back to the "land of the dead." Constantine comes running to Zatanna's aid, armed with a glowing sword and Merlin's staff, and his right arm clad in some kind of mystical armour. He takes care of the demons easily and tells Trevor to look after Zatanna, who's been knocked unconscious, while he runs after Faust. He also tells Dr. Mist and Peril to go back to the Black Room in case the demons three come that way.
Constantine tracks Faust deeper into the headquarters, alone, and while they both think they have the upper hand on the other, Faust tells Constantine that he has him right where he wants him as Faust knew Constantine would find a way into the Black Room and take what he needed to open the Map Box himself. That item being the skeleton key rumored to have been carved from the bones of St. Peter himself and able to open anything.
Constantine tries to get the map from Faust but Faust hits him with a blast of energy, thinking he's won, but is shocked to find Constantine unharmed and his tattoo glowing strangely. Faust recognizes the tattoo, but Constantine is clueless about the tattoo on his forearm. Using this distraction to his advantage, Constantine strikes with his magical sword and gets the Map Box away from Faust.
Constantine opens the box, thinking he's won but Faust calls him an idiot. Faust tells him: "All this time you were so worried about chasing me that you never stopped to ask the right questions...like how did I even know about A.R.G.U.S. and the Black Room? And how did I know what I needed to open the map was in it?"
Constantine figures out too late that there was a mole on the team as Faust tells him that he made a mistake by not working alone. (ughhhhhh can Faust go away now?)
And then this happens:

UGHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOO
I so love the art and characters in this, even if the main plot line with Dr. Faust didn't interest me all that much.
I have #12 and the Annual, but I haven't read them yet (whyyyyyyyy Dr. Mist??? Whyyyyyy?) so I'll be saving Timothy Hunter's other appearances for another day while I get caught up with this title.

Date: 2012-12-18 05:18 am (UTC)I've always found it kind of weird that Timothy Hunter was never really used for more stuff after his series ended. I'd quite like to see him grown up into a proper wizard.

Date: 2012-12-18 03:46 pm (UTC)It does irk me a bit that they went with such American-style houses (weatherboards aren't so common in the UK), but then that's always a problem in writing or art - if you don't know that such-and-such looks different in a specific country, you don't know that you need to do (picture) research in the first place...
Overall it's really exciting to see Timothy turn up in the regular DCU - I never thought that would happen! :)
