I remember seeing this before on scans_daily, along with several other examples of Red Skull being abusive toward Mother Night.

If I recall correctly, Viper observes some of this and warns Red Skull that he'd better not try out that crap out on her. Red Skull replies, no no, he only does this to Mother Night.

Looking up Mother Night's character on comicvine, I see it only gets way worse from here.

It does, there's a particularly disturbing scene where he practically beats her to an inch of her death, and it's very graphic.

The last panel's elongation of Johann, without any other context, is kind of sitcom.

It's the complete opposite of this scene, but I'm still reminded of the bit in Zoolander with Mugatu shrieking at his assistant about his foamy latte.

I almost expected the Skull and Night to start looking at each other suggestively as a henchman looks on awkwardly.

This is no surprise, after all he was going to kill Sin when she was born because she a girl and not a boy.

Yeah, I loved the matter-of-factly way he talks about his financing world terrorists. His phone conversations must be hilarious.

He had board meetings and everything... seriously. He was running a number of schemes and organisations at the same time, from the Scourge of the Underworld, to the Watchdogs and others I can't even remember.

I began reading Cap's book during "Acts Of Vengeance" and stopped around "Streets Of Poison", which meant that I got to know the character of Mother Night but didn't read the stories where the Skull was shown being abusive to her.

I felt sorry for her just reading a summary of what the Skull did to her. She ended up meeting a guy--Cutthroat--who tried to help convince her that she didn't deserve this kind of treatment, that she wasn't worthless...and then Cutthroat got killed and that was that.

I would have liked it a lot if she had finally broken free of the Skull, perhaps even reformed and joined the Thunderbolts or something.

Instead, they just had her stay with the skull until she was killed off by Bucky. What a waste.

Some victims can't break free from their cycle of abuse and violence. I remember Cutthroat - to make matters worse, he was killed by Crossbones, who was also quite close to her.

Oh and Streets of Poison is hysterical!

Yeah, especially hysterical in hindsight. Back when I first read it I believed all of the "Every single illegal drug is illegal because it will KILL YOU!" propaganda.

I will give Gruenwald credit for a couple of things, though: that arc compared the Super Soldier Serum to PEDs years before anybody else brought up the similarity, and having Cap go up against Crossbones without it near the end and actually succeed in kicking his ass was pretty damn awesome, I thought.
