Following Selina and Slam's hijacking of the cops diamonds, in the process blowing up the police evidence transportation van that the policemen had "borrowed" for their deal, the cops who shot Holly are suddenly in a whole mess of trouble.

They shoot and dump the bodies of the Russian gangsters they were making the deal with to buy themselves some time, and they start shaking down various fences and the like to see how might have stolen the diamonds.

Meanwhile, Crispus Allen is just closing up for the night when the cop who gave Slam information regarding the corrupt cops tells him that they've discovered one of their police vans burnt in a car park and that it looks like it was being used to transport drugs. He asks Allen if he wants to come with, and Crispus says that if the other detectice leaves the address he'll make his way there in a few minutes.

Selina and Slam then set part two of their plan into motion. Selina rings up the drug lord that the cops work for, Xavier Dylan from the first part, and tells him that she wants to make a deal for the $28 million in diamonds she stole. Selina says that she was hired to steal the diamonds by a rival crime syndicate and that she had decided to ring Dylan to get a better deal.

On the table besides Dylan's bed Selina had left the photos Slam took of himself handing an envelope to the younger blond cop that works for him, and says that Slam is actually working for the Mob and that she had taken this photo of him handing a bribe to said cop.

Dylan says that the cop being on someone else's payrole explains how the thief was able to open a suitcase that was handcuffed to the cop's wrist without anyone noticing (because NO ONE can be THAT good), and says that he opened it for her while everyone was distracted by the exploding policevan. She asks Dylan if he wants to think this over, and says that she'll ring back tomorrow at the same time.

Dylan immediately rings Sgt. MacNalty to relay the information that he ws just given, though MacNalty is skeptical, as he knows that Slam is just a PI not a bagman for the Mob. But ringing a friend in the GCPD organised crime unit confirms it, so MacNulty and another cop begin beating the crap out of the blond cop to find out where the diamonds went.

The cop pleads his innocence, and when he's shown the photo of Slam offering an envelope, he says that Slam was out for the reward on Holly and that was looking for some leads on her. The cop says that the envelope had some photos of some girls that looked like her and Slam was asking if any of them were her.

Naturally their next move is to head around to Slam's office to demand to know what the heck is going on, but little to they know that Selina and Detective Allen have bugged Slam's office and are recording the whole thing. Slam initially backs up the cop's story, but when they threaten to shoot him he lets them know what REALLY is going on...

Allen follows her down (using the stairs) and ends up shooting MacNulty when he refuses to surrender. The only one of the corrupt cops left standing is the blond one who was the focus of the entire scheme, who demands that Selina and Allen let him go or he'll kill them. Unfortunately for him, Slam was just pretending to be dead as he was wearing a bulletproof vest, and he promptly gets up and beats him unconscious.

Allen handcuffs the two surviving dirty cops, and dryly asks if there was actually a plan behind all of this? Selina asks him if he has enough to bring down MacNulty's superiors who happen to be in on it, but Allen says that the tape won't stand up in court, but it should be enough to get the cops to roll on their bosses. He adds that he'll erase the footage from before Selina shows up and say the camera was hit by a stray bullet, on the basis that he'd be nuts to hand in footage of him working with one of Gotham's more famous supervillains without trying to arrest her.

Selina runs off when the actual cops show up in response to the shoot out, and Crispus quickly works out a Catwoman-free story to explain just what the heck just happened. Shortly after, he arrests MacNulty's Lieutenant who acted as the in-between between the dirty cops and Dylan Xavier...

Detective Allen also announces that they're not looking to arrest Holly anymore, saying that the police now suspect that MacNulty just made her up as part of his cover-up of the earlier murder of the undercover policeman. So we get a scene of Holly getting back together with her girlfriend Karen, who was understandibly worried about her, aw.

And finally, we meet Dylan's boss, who is more than slightly ticked off about this entire situation...

And now you know how the grudge between Black Mask and Catwoman started! :D

My only problem with this is that I just wish they could've explained a bit better exactly how Black Mask goes from looking like a standard issue gangster in a pinstripe suit with a black mask to a guy wearing modern suits and a skull face. I was reading Catwoman at the time and I don't remember there being any explanation at all for that, especially given he's the big bad of the next story.

Well, I could have done without what happened to Maggie, but somehow, I wish more writers were given that sort of freedom. Granted, Bru wasn't as big a writer then as he is now, but still.

The charred skull look has been Black Mask's face long before the Catwoman series. It happened at the end of his first ever appearance, when he fell into a fire during his fight with Batman & Robin and the heated mask melted his flesh. It's why he feels he has to keep the black mask on at all times.

He first stopped wearing the mask during No Man's Land when he started the False Face Society. He's already got the skull look there. After that, he kinda wears or doesn't wear the mask depending on his mood, I guess.

Ah, gotcha. See, that was the thing, though - I only read Catwoman during that period, and I've still not read No Man's Land (planning on getting the newer trades when they're cheaper) or Black Mask's earlier appearances (penalty of being a trade-waiter). And, literally, there is zero explanation in the title as to his appearance change, which was always kind-of confusing given they were drawn by the same person. But thank you for the heads up.

Erm, what?

If I remember correctly, Two-Face never ordered Roman killed. The last time we saw Roman in NML, he was still alive in Blackgate, and successfully convinced the other inmates to not kill Nightwing.
