Supergirl and Mary Marvel: Once a Year

There's a story I really like from the Bizarro Comics collection. It's...well, you'll see.



They talk for a while. Mary's been retired for a few years and she's settled down. She mentions that she hasn't said "the s word" in years. They talk about how the world has changed and end up reminiscing.





This is a solid story with some very nice characters moments. It's pretty short, only seven pages, but you should totally check it out of you get the chance. Bizarro Comics is a collection of DC superhero short stories which has a lot of really cool stuff in it and it is definitely worth investing in.

Aw, I was thinking about this story the other day.

Good to see that she just chose to retire on her own, for some reason I thought that Shazam just took his powers back after she hit a certain age and gave them to someone else, for some reason.

Better it's her decision, instead of her getting "Susaned". :)

Susan being such a common name, it worries me a bit that I had absolutely no trouble understanding that reference.

Interestingly both Mary Marvel and Kara Zor-El were co-created by the same man, Otto Binder. Supergirl being created after DC had basically put Fawcett out of business. No coincidence why they both (pre-Dan Didio) had similar personalities. Otto's daughter (who died a tragic death as a teenager) was named Mary (apparently after you-know-who).

No, this story is pretty out of continuity. All of the ones from the Bizarro collections are. That means that they can go fun and weird places, though.
