Inkyparthia is a tumblr user who focuses on history comics/art, mostly American and French revolution focused. Unfortunately, the tumblr hasn't been updated in almost a year, but I love history and just recently discovered it so have a few comics.

The Marquis de Lafayette really liked Washington, to the point where he named one of his kids after him. And yeah, there are reports that Washington said that Lafayette could totally consider him like a "friend and father", but I don't know where any of those reports are (except wiki) so I can't provide links.

Apparently, the unicorn stands for hope and aspirations and the flower on its butt is from the Hamilton family coat of arms. Or, Hamilton's just a psychic who managed to predate My Little Pony by two hundred or so years.

There are more history related comics and arts over at the tumblr.

Aren't the Lion and the Unicorn a British symbol? Kinda weird seeing them used by Revolutionary War era people on the other side of that conflict.

Thirded. But then, they're not too far removed culturally or by generation, so there's still gonna be guys who are proud of the greater family heritage over the Imperial cultural allusions.

They're both fairly common heraldic symbols, not unique to England, Scotland, or the UK.

They're not unique, but they're the coat of arms of United Kingdom. You would think that people in a war against them would distance them for such symbolism.

It'd be odd if someone had used a lion and a unicorn, yes, but separately?

Separately they're still parts of the coat of arms of the nation you are fighting. I doubt anyone was carving sickles or hammers here, during the Winter War.

I can't speak to that, not being familiar with Finnish history. But I will say that the lion and the unicorn, taken individually, seems to have had a lot more varied associations than the hammer and sickle symbol did at the relative times.

Actually, taking a variation of the opponent's heraldry was quite common (to show your right of inheritance/that you're the proper representative) it caused a war between Swede and Denmark one :p

Didn't the revolutionaries consider themselves British? I remember reading that Paul Revere would have never cried out "The British are coming" because as far as he was concerned the British were already there and rebelling against the government.
