The first official job with Black Lagoon company doesn't go that well for Rock, as he and Revy have to dive into a sunken German U-boat to retrieve a long lost painting that the Nazis were attempting to transport to Japan for safe keeping towards the end of the war. They find the painting fairly quickly, and surprisingly it's still in good condition, but Rock is horrified when Revy decides to engage in a little bit of the old graverobbing by raiding the corpses of the dead Nazis for medals and things to sell.
Rock feels that they should leave the men as they found them, but Revy, who has lived an incredibly harsh life, finally has enough of his moralising and decides to explain who she sees things and why.
Note: this is from an earlier translation, her name is Revy, derived from Rebecca, not Levy as it says here.

The anime version of Roberta's Bloodhunt says that Revy's decription of her childhood actually downplays how bad it was, if anything.
Several issues later, Rock and Revy are running some errands for Lagoon Company, and the fact that Rock manages to consistantly get what they're after his way (negotiating calming) rather than her usual way grates at her nerves all day, until they finally just snap...

The next issue Revy decides to follow up on her threat and shoot Rock in the face, only to be surprised when he grabs her gun at close range and points it away from him to prevent him from getting shot. He tells her that back before he joined LC he was working a job that he constantly had to walk on eggshells and brown-nose his superiors just to get through the day, and he didn't think that he'd have to do that now too.
He goes on to call Revy a thug, because all she cares about is money. This makes Revy demand to know what makes him think she can say that to her, as he doesn't know anything about her. Rock say this is true, but really at the end of the day...

It's the chief of Roanapur's police department (yeah they have a police department, who knew?), who says that he's going to have to take them downtown for firing a gun in the middle of a crowded marketplace, but their boss can just pick them up later that day.
Sat in the police car, Rock and Revy enjoy a quiet moment after their arguement...

And thus, a friendship is formed, huzzah! I recommend catching the latter scene in the anime, because the actors REALLY nail it in the dub. ^^
