Godzilla: Half Century War #4

Part 4: Bombay 1987







Mechagodzilla (the Heisei version) is dropped into Bombay to contain Godzilla. Ken comments how the new AMF members are getting all the fun new toys and wonders if the good doctor (from #2) had any part in designing MechaG. Ota tells him if there is a drill then yes, but he doesn't know.

The two have a small argument when Ota begins to smoke and Ken warns him it's a filthy habit, but Ota reasons if they're gonna die it'll probably be due to the big giant monsters they chase and not from his habit. Still, Ota goes outside the van to continue smoking. There he see's his old "friend" Deverich admiring the battle between Godzilla and his Mecha doppleganger. Ota alerts Ken to call for some back-up. He then follows Deverich to a deal and after it decides to score some payback for #3's events. Which leads us to this:










Yeah.. a Godzilla three-way occurs. I'm not going to spoil you on the winner of this three-way brawl, nor what this outcome brings about to Ota. I will spoil you that no matter who wins the fight, Deverich's machine transmitted far enough into space and this is the final panel of the issue of what's approaching the Earth now:




Yeah, the Earth is BONED.

And yea, if your plan accidentally brings another godzilla, it is a bad plan.

Or an awesome plan. One of the two.

Well what else are you going to use to fight Godzilla but another Godzilla.

Ironically, Godzilla himself is a Godzilla threshold moment.

In this case, though, Space Godzilla probably is worse than just dealing with Godzilla ^^

Puts me in mind of that Guards! Guards! scene where poor Wonse thinks the best way to end the reign of the dragon would be to summon another dragon and see if they'd cancel each other out through fighting.

I think Space Godzilla often goes unused because the movie he's in isn't too popular in the scheme of things. Plus, the Heisei-era movies generally aren't as well-known as the Showa ones, even though the movies are arguably much better, for the most part.

I'm actually surprised, but anytime I've made a Godzilla thread the most favorite Kaiju villain some usually say is Space Godzilla. It surprises the heck out of me given that exact reason.

I was only shown the Showa movies when I was younger, so I was really surprised to learn about the Heisei ones when I got this really good Godzilla book for my birthday, with tons of Arthur Adams illustrations. SpaceGodzilla looked cool, but I think my favourite has always been the Showa Mechagodzilla, just for that retro flavour.

Space Godzilla is one of my top villains of the Toho universe, along with another heisei villain: Destroyah.

But the tops for me is King Ghidorah.

SG has a cool design and is a Godzilla, which makes me like him even if the movie was merely good and not great.

Oh, this is just so wonderful I could weep. I really, really can't wait for the trade of this, there's just so much obvious love for Godzilla here.

Also, upon further reflection, I love the little easter eggs. There's more obvious ones like Deverich's name, but then just little things like Godzilla 'raiding' somewhere, which is a cute nod to the second movie.

I'm so glad you're posting these. I have the trade pre-ordered. It's so DAMN BEAUTIFUL!

The love is there with the skill needed to tell the tale. I think we have the best Godzilla comic to date with this one.

I tweeted James Stokoe himself and asked if there was a chance he or IDW could make prints or posters for some of these pages. Sadly it appears they cannot. :(
