I ask because "Irkutsk" and the old guy's speech paterns say "Russian", but the "You dead, Bro" and the iconography in the final panel say "M-13". A mashup, perhaps?
What is "give us beeg" supposed to mean? Is it supposed to be "big" in a Russian accent? That'd be a little weird since nothing else he says gets spelled phonetically. Plus, I'm not sure it'd make sense. If I understand the scene correctly, he's not asking them for money to kill Hawkeye, he's offering them money for permission to kill him. Right?
Because they're 'junior associates', I imagine they're paying for permission to kill Hawkeye because not only has he insulted them, but it'd allow them to move up in the world.
Also - the guy's asking for a 'big okay', as in, Fisk and the others giving him the okay to kill Hawkeye. So.. Yeah, it's a weird case of that one word being spelled phonetically.
I assumed that was vig as in vigorish, the cut of a bet that a bookmaker takes, here somewhat generalized to mean the cut of the crime-proceeds that goes to Fisk and what I'm just going to assume is called the Crime Counsel.
I can't quite get over Jessica Drew dressing like she just walked off the set of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in. Just how long was she in suspended animation, anyway?
As writer Fraction explained on Tumblr, artist David Aja decided it'd be Retro Night at Avengers Mansion. Notice that the other two ladies' styles aren't especially modern, either.
Is it just me who thinks Clint's habit with women isn't as funny or endearing as they trying to make it seem like? Especially when Kate seems to be presented as a potential option.
I don't know, I like the whole Kate angle. The fact that Clint, for once, is not interested, but she vaguely is.
Of course, she has her own book and ships going on, so I have no idea how this'll play out. But it's amusing for the moment.
Clint potentially cheating on Jessica casually? That bugs me, and it feels off. But I guess I have to admit to myself that I've been reading the characters for 20 years, and they aren't always going to be the same characters.
How he gets fallout for it, and how he deals with the fallout will define how I react to the character (and the writer). In the meantime, though, I like the book.
regarding Kate and Clint, Matt Fraction specifically said, on his Tumblr, that they are never going to have sex, not while he's the one writing this book.
as for the cheating, Fraction seems to be building a 'afraid to commit' plot with Clint, with the character divorcing, cheating or else bailing out from any serious relationship.
Jessica would later, in the current issue, walk right up to Barton, smack him in the face twice, and then quite calmly explain why he's a scum-ass who ends up driving everyone away because he hates himself. And Clint stood there and took it, because he knows she's right.
So while it's played for humor here, later on it's played for drama.
I appreciate Mr. Negative and Mr. Owlsley correctly voicing that if you kill an Avenger (y'know, the people who have Captain America and Thor on their side), you get the rest of them down on your heads.
It surprises me Fisk isn't against it on the same grounds, given how he often played against DD and Spidey in the shadows for most of their history, but then, he could be playing a deeper game to hurt these guys and just screw with Hawkeye (and maybe misdirecting away from a larger scheme).
