This actually looks a lot like the Electric Company Spider-Man stories.

They're from the same era, a similar genre (TV-based humour), and both have 'likeness of real people' as part of the artistic goal, all of which tend to cause similarities in style, so that's not surprising.

(It varies from issue to issue how much they seem to try to make the characters look like the actors, aside from Kotter always being a pretty good likeness of Gabe Kaplan...ironically, when the rest of the characters get looser, Freddy looks more like Lawrence Jacobs than when everyone else is a strong likeness, at least IMO.)

I'm just happily astounded that there's comic art of a John Travolta character with a literal pink elephant in the room!

Hah, she's actually a white elephant (and, judging by the cover, she's meant to be the standard grey)... In fact, just after the dancing scene, Freddie makes a joke about painting her pink and leaving her in a bar (because they're used to pink elephants, there).

"You're beautiful when you're wet" is nothing compared to a line from the actual show. The set up is that Gabe gets Julie a Christmas tree and Julie gets Gabe a Channukah bush, resulting in a "what the hell is this" reaction from him. Later in the episode, there's this exchange: "I love your tree." "I love your bush."

The TV series had some good ones, yes, but it's a lot more impressive to get one past the comics code than to get one past TV censors.

The TV series had a whole episode based around 'Hotsie' Totsie's sex life, so a couple innuendos about the Kotters' sex life didn't stand out nearly so much.

I'm finding Travolta's pose somewhat suggestive here. Was the artist implying anything?

Which one? When he's dancing with Petunia, or sleeping cuddling with her trunk?

(The story does present Petunia and Vinnie as having some sort of romantic attraction to each other...)
