i mean who can really blame jason for wanting a clean slate?
that said he IS being a bit mellow dramatic here.
still think i think the story potential thought, it IS the start of a new arc right?
then again, who am i to call anyone synical... i still rant every time some one mentions Mary Jane, or Avengers.... don't even get me started on X-Men...
ah my bad. I see cynicism every where now... i had to study for this really big grammar test all weekend and now that i have finished it i am just so freaking exhausted....
But then that matches DOTF overall. Joker doesn't even need to kill anyone major these days, he shows he can still be scary basically by trolling people. This applies to his getting everyone to that dinner table in DOTF's finale, as well as burning Jason's face off. Besides, how much damage 'burning his face off' did was stated to not be permanent in the last issue.
I still call bullshit on that ending, we should have actually gotten to see what the Joker said to the various Bat-folks, because as it is we're only being TOLD that the Joker really got inside their heads, instead of actually being SHOWN.
I think I would be less annoyed if the memory loss was the result of the Joker's tampering with Jason's helmet. I originally thought it would be the Joker's fault since his message to Jason was something along the lines if Jason wanted a clean slate he could have one. I'm not sure how I feel about the memory loss being Jason's idea yet.
Also, I'd been taking a break from DC comics lately, but this book makes me rethink that...Jason, why must you be so loveable to me?
that said, i think i can see where they are going with this. In order to truely move on, Jason has to accept both the good and the bad in his past. and instead of looking at things that are "good tainted bad" look at what good would not have happened if it were not for the bad.
Jason is who he is because of what he has experienced. the do not make him who he is, but he is who he is because of the choice he made... does that make any sense...
i'm not saying that is what he is doing NOW, i meant that is what he NEEDS to do in order to move on. and i think that is what this arc is about. him learning that surgically removing teh good along with the bad is not the answer to his pain.
i don't hate all of it, there have even been times when the artists have been able to make THIS costume work.... but this artist (while i like his starfire, as she is less waifish) just takes that top part of the costume and makes it 20x's worse....
there have even been times when the artists have been able to make THIS costume work...
There have?! I'll admit I haven't read this book at all beyond the first few issues (which I browsed through to see if they were really as bad as I thought they'd be...which they were), but I haven't seen anyone making that costume look good. Mind pointing some examples out to me? ^_^*
Star's original costume was skimpy as all get-out, true, and has been drawn terribly by many artists, but at least that outfit was decorative and I could buy that Starfire would wear something like that. With this new one, it doesn't seem to have even that, and the entire point of it seems to be to call attention to the fact that the woman is almost naked.
Is it just me or does the shading in the middle-bottom panel of the first page make it look like Starfire's having not only a nipple pop out under the armor on her right breast but also like she needs to shave lower to wear those armor-panties?
That's just what I thought when I saw that shadow on her breast, it just seems so specifically placed and shaped. This shading in general is very misleading.
I still really hate that retcon that the Joker somehow orchestrated every single event in Jason Todd's life. It makes the Joker way to much of an ultra-competent schemer and really contributes to my growing sense that the character has become way too "big" and has become a major example of Popularity Power.
Not to mention it leaves Jason as someone who's completely defined by other people instead of his own wishes, and makes very little sense when you consider the sheer scale of Joker's manipulation and numerous factors that he couldn't have logically known about or controlled.
It's just.... I'm pretty sure I'm sick of the Joker at this point, he's just terrible and boring.
He already went over this with Bruce in the cave! He had that split-second of momentary doubt but Bruce, BRUCE of all people, managed to calm his fears. He said that Jason is his own man, not defined by Bruce or Joker or anyone.
Which I thought was the point of Jason's character; that someone could overcome the shittiest life-start imaginable and become a hero. Even when living hand to mouth on the streets, he refused to be a crook. Hell, towards the end of his career as Robin he was growing more and more disillusioned with Batman's ethics. His character is defined by making his own choices despite his environment and peers.
So ... what happened between that little heart-to-heart in the cave and this to change his mind? What happened to his little coma hallucination where he decided to stop destroying his past so he wouldn't hurt the people he loves? People like ROY AND KORY?
And secondly, uh, you know why your past came back to kick you in the ass? Because the Joker doesn't like the fact that Jason is alive. So ... any reason why he hasn't taken his little group to Arkham and have Starfire nuke him already? (Yeah I know the Joker can't really die in comics, but I'd like an in-story reason ...)
I haven't been following this at all, so my opinion is hardly informed, but...
1) the artwork on that first page (especially the first panel) is really not laid out terribly well, IMHO. It's visually confusing and doesn't seem to follow perspective correctly, to me.
2) Listen, I'm a hetero-dude who lurves me the boobies. I mean LURVES them. But Starfire straight-up looks silly here. Not really sexy, but silly. The artist is doing his best to convey certain things, but it just doesn't work for me. Her outfit just looks ridiculous. Her trying to be 'Grrr. I'm all ragey, take me seriously' is kind of defeated by 'look at my nipple-shields and obvious lack of pubic hair'. YMMV.
I'm really conflicted. As a general rule it didn't feel horrible and out of character (aka 'Lobdell-esque'), but I'm really not happy about the mindwipe plot device. Guess it depends where they go with it.
