Based on the novel by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, here is the origin of the main villain from the story. From issue one of the comicbook adaptation...















The story is essentially a modern retelling of Dracula, set in NYC and with a vague science fiction twist. I'm about two thirds of the way through the novel and it's pretty good thus far.

I was so dense I honestly didn't clock onto the idea that it was a modern retelling of Dracula until they established that the Master couldn't cross water, but generally, I thought the Strain was amazing. I'm not sure if it was just the combination of writers on the series, as I'm not familiar with Chuck Hogan's other work, but Del Toro's influence was obvious having seen stuff like Blade II and Cronos and stuff like that.

But I loved it. A very smart, very intelligent, creepy pseudo-scientific take on vampires that, for me, was the perfect antidote to having just read the Twilight series out of morbid curiosity. To anyone who hasn't read the series yet? Do so, and then come back and tell me that you didn't shit bricks when you understood exactly what the Night Eternal was.
