I have a scene in a long-standing novel project where a young girl is apprenticed to an older male wizard and complains about having to cast magic with phallic sticks, the symbols behind magic etc.

So the mentor hands over his staff and challenges her to a duel with anything but sticks. The girl chooses vines and tries to ensnare her teacher. He rips the vines from ground, dries and forms them into a wreath, then lights it on fire and throws it like a chakram, creating a wall of flame. The girl admits defeat.

"Implements are just tools. Symbols are just symbols. The magic is the same no matter what...

Plus, a staff is a good weapon to hit people with, and nice for hiking."

The mentor is a bit of a riddle-spouting, mirthful jerk.

Someone observed that, if swords and staves are phalli, it's still not at all clear that they symbolize your penis. It just mean the warriors and wizards are grasping a phallus all the time. While I'm 100% supportive of men playing with erect male genitalia, it's not like women don't do it, too.

A sword is meant to be used as an extension of your arm, and it's a principle that's also mentioned so often in movies, books etc. whenever a swordmaster has to train a new pupil, that's it's nearly become a cliche.
The only truly phallic weapon I can think of at the moment would be Millss' and Biselys'Slaine, where Slaine wear a combined belt/codpiece decorated with a big snarling boar head, complete with two massive protrouding tusks.
He even stabs the horned god with it, when he is tied down to the ground and the horned god is leaning above him, trying to slit his throat.

In one of the novels of the Dresden Files, Harry's ex-girlfriend Elaine makes fun of him for using phallic magical foci like his staff and blasting rod. Elaine herself uses some very Wonder Woman-ish foci, bracers and lightning chain (conveniently rechargable by wall socket).

This reminds me of something. There was a gay slasher movie (as in the killer and most of the main characters were homosexual), but instead of the killer using a phallic knife, he used a more yonic sickle. I always wondered if that was intentional.

So, I like Oglaf. A lot. But I only remember to check back once every 2 months or so. And I usually do it by going to google and typing in "Oglaf" to get the web page. Seeing this reminded me, and I did so.

Oglaf's home page did not turn up. Several sites linking to Oglaf, yes, but not Oglaf itself. I have safesearch turned off, as much as you can nowadays. This has me a bit concerned. Is google extending it's "No porn!!!" policy even more, or is it just some strange glitch in my searching?

(Yeah, getting to oglaf.com, is easy, but just typing oglaf and clicking the first link is *slightly* less work. I'm lazy.)

Same results here, and also under safe search (which resets user-specific prefs). Dunno if it's porn-censorship (I have all kinds of "safe searches" turned off…), or just a failure of The Algorithm.

Yeah, same results here. Apparently Google adjusted its search results some time last year so that "moderate safe search" is on by default? Something like that.
