September 2013 will be the home of DC Comics' Villains Month. Every New 52 title will be taken over by a rogue for a done-in-one tale and have ".1" added to its numbering, acting as a sort of aside from the main series.

Villains Month is the kickoff of the New 52’s first universe-spanning event, “Forever Evil,” which will be anchored by a miniseries bearing that name from regular “Justice League of America” creative team Geoff Johns and David Finch. It all flows out of the events in this summer’s Justice League crossover “Trinity War.”

All of the Villains Month covers will feature a "3D motion image" on the front and back covers as well.

“It’s called a 3D motion cover and it’s essentially artwork that’s been separated onto different layers, so when you hold the cover, which is a premium stock cover, and you slightly rotate the comic book left or right or up and down, the images move a bit,” Lee added.

"It’s an incredible 3D effect that shows depth of field on the covers," said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio in the same release. "It’s the full cover stock, so it’s not anything that’s been glued on. More importantly, it’s actually pliable and soft to the touch - it’s a brand new technology and we’re going to be the first ones debuting in this fashion."

I think New52 Creeper some manner of demon, bound in Katana's sword, until Killer Croc broke it.

The solicit of that one talks about the animal side taking over Kirk's dominance so I'm guessing it's going to be more of a Hulk-like story.

ENOUGH WITH GRODD ALREADY.

The last arc in Flash was boring-as-hell and focused Grodd & his Gorillas invading whichever one of Keystone or Central they're using right now. Can't they focus on any of the other Flash villains?

The Rouges haven't been developed beyond "We're the Rouges and we're MAD AT YOU, Captain Cold!" and they're literally introducing the new incarnation of Reverse Flash right now! Couldn't they get the spotlight instead?

I really enjoyed Gorilla Warfare, but I guess YMMV.

But yeah, the Rogues will get their own Flash one-shot written and drawn by the standard Flash team, and they're getting a five-part mini tying into Forever Evil, so I think they're going to get a lot more development soon. Reverse Flash is also getting the third and final Flash one-shot.

I enjoyed Gorilla Warfare somewhat, but to me it had the same problem as the first storyline, it was just too damn slow. Each issue felt like only an incremental advance in the storyline, it was like each issue was a single act in a TV show, but the commercial breaks were a month long. In contrast, I thought the second storyline, introducing the Rogues, was great and I really enjoyed that each individual issue told a complete story while still building up to something bigger.

Feels like it's been a while since we got a proper Two-Face story, kind of excited for that, and the fact that it's a one shot is cool, I like one shots.

Those 3d covers though man, DC is just trying SO hard to bring back the 90's.

They had a back-up starring Two-Face in Detective recently. It was...really weird and stupid as I remember. A ninja clan tried to recruit him, I think.

As someone who can only read about how bad the 90s was for comics, I don't see these covers as much of a problem. Some of them are pretty nice, and (if) they're making the physical covers work like this it'll probably look a lot nicer than if they were actually made in the 90s

Darkseid and Bizzaro's work especially well...

I find it amazing tha tthe only thing that was missing from DC's throwback to the 90's was those stupid holo-covers which they are now redoing. I mean, Didio makes a whole lot of conversationa bout how it's a new technology, but it is exactly the same only a much refined scale, so I find it an amazing idea to rob the readers of an extra 1€ per issue.

Date: 2013-06-05 12:15 am (UTC)
From: [personal profile] darkknightjrk
To be fair, Marvel's doing something similar to the holo-covers with the "titanium" Age of Ultron covers.

And honestly, I just don't get the hate for the covers. I mean, who gives a shit how they do the cover if the actual issue is good?

Because the price of the issue itself will rise due to the covers? Comics are already a medium with and horrible quantity/price ratio for most writers so while this might give a short term boost it might very well be losing quite a significant number of readers long term.

The next time Joker actually appears (since I'm presuming they're basically putting him on ice post-DOTF for a while), I would just like to see the face mask be held together with increasing amounts of superglue and tape and staples.

You know what I find ridiculous about this? They are releasing 4 issues of EACH of the 4 main Batman titles, plus 4 issues of Justice League. You add in the rest of the Bat-titles like Nightwing, Batwoman, etc, that makes it, what, 28 books being released in September related to Batman.

Probably some kind of origin issue or some manner of thing. The main 'event' is 'Forever Evil', after all, so maybe they're going to explore one of his earliest encounter with Batman or whatever. Tie it in to Zero Year, given they're also doing those four issues of Batman with the other rogues, such as Riddler.

Huh, just today I discovered Hawkman's classic foe, Lion-Mane was reintroduce in the DC universe... and is he silly! I mean, it's a unique take, I'll give it that mcuh, but just silly to have not only be a ManLion-CentuarLion with weird body tattoos that look ALOT like his striped pants, but also has three human warrior wives that are generic and have dress as silly as every other super-villainess in comics today..

New technology? What, lenticular covers? Maybe it's a slightly better or less expensive process, but let's not go overboard, here.

This actually isn't a terrible idea, but the .1 numbering convention? FUCK YOU. Seriously, guys, just keep the numbers and move on. It's super-annoying every time they do this.

Also, is anyone else made as tired as I feel when they read about how these events rolling into each other from one to the next. Just tiring.

Cyborg Superman? Hunh.

New52 Hank Henshaw (a fully human one) was seen working on the android body of Spartan (in Team 7 #5). Maybe they merge, he goes craaazy, and tries to replace Superman as the A-1 hero?
