Also, Thunderbolt Ross looks to be one of the oldest Lieutenants I've ever seen.

I would assume such is the case, but even then, most Lieutenants are in their 20's. This version of Ross looks to be 35 minimum.

I'm so torn about this arc. I love Gillen's stuff and I really, really want to read a Tony book every month, but I just can't shake my distaste for this sort of retcon. I dislike it when things are added to a character's history (or in this case, pre-history) to make them more special, more warmongering, more competent, more... whatever their defining characteristic is... than anybody else in their 'verse. You know: "Wolverine is really a part-man part-lycanthrope mutant!", that sort of thing. I know it can be (and has been) done well in lots of cases (Peter David's additions to Bruce Banner's childhood trauma, for example) but when it has that whiff of outside influence it just... yeah, I dunno. It just irks me.

For now I've dropped Iron Man because of this (and because I'm not a big fan of "Tony in SPAAAAAACE"), so I'd be grateful for future scan updates so I can make informed decisions about whether or not to go back to it. Thanks, OP!

This is one of the biggest problems with such a long-running continuity...the need to constantly ADD things. It all gets too much after a certain point. This isn't bad, just...just...CLUTTERED.

Whilst Tony's Dad having astounding Science Adventures in a 1960's setting is a fun one, this does seem to be over-egging the pudding.

Tony Stark is a very, very, VERY smart man... what else of an origin does he NEED?

I completely agree, this just seems excessive. I mean, I'll wait until this has played out before completely decrying it, but if this really goes in the direction that it seems to be heading I think it would genuinely not fit with (my personal view at least, of) the Marvel Universe.
