Buff and, looking at the colours here, possibly of a different ethnicity to what he usually is. I appreciate it's supposed be the lighting, but what with him having black eyebrows instead of white ones, he doesn't look like himself at all.
I liked this issue, the conversation between Fabio and his parents about him being a mutant was very well written, well, on the *parents side*, I really liked how they simply wouldn't listen assuming the X-men had drugged him or turned him into a mutant.
Though his part of the dialogue felt a little cheesy. I dunno. Like it was riffing off one to many coming-out scenes from various soap-operas.
Does Marvel ever explain why ever Christianity in the Marvel U is anti-mutant? Like I get the analogies writers try to draw between being a mutant and being gay/black/insert minority here but Christianity has been a driving force behind the advancement of many minority group. In the comics they are just presented as non-supportive ignoramuses/violent bigots.
Given the whole parallels to homosexuality I find it especially galling the family struggles of a strongly religious family goes through when presented with a non-traditionally orientation(or in this case non-traditional genetics) family member are played for laughs/minimized. Its kind of a big deal.
Huh. Thinking of the whole mutant/evolution thing as it's presented in the MU, and how very headdesky it is if you think about it seriously, you'd kind of expect that in the MU it'd go the other way around, with the creationists and IDers holding up mutants as "proof" that evolution is nonsense.
I'd imagine it is quiet similar to the real world elements of Christianity have certainly helped promote the rights of some minorities while other elements have been a massive road block in the exact same situation at the exact same time.
I'd say the most likely explanation is in the MU fundamentalist elements early on decided mutants were an abomination and like in the real world the more extreme the fundamentalism the harder a time letting go of the idea that they are right is for them.
I mean after all in the sliding time scale of the marvel universe mutants have only been out and open in public for a few decades now and it usually takes a lot longer for certain stripes of Christianity to admit they are wrong.
I like that Magneto is actually giving out sensible reasons as to why he of all people hasn't kicked the shit out of Scott, yet, even though there is the ring of hypocrisy to things whenever Magneto's involved in discussions like these.
Either you learn from your mistakes, which makes you look like a hypocrite; or you don't learn from your mistakes, which makes you a soon-to-be-dead idiot. It's a survivors' problem.
The weird thing is that Magneto unfortunately falls into both categories, in my eyes, although the 'idiot' part is more symptomatic of him being an incredibly popular villain in particular periods even though he's never allowed to win.
Nobody's allowed to win in the long run in comics. Not even the heroes. So far the only things that have endured have been bad costume choices, asshattery, and Reed/Sue.
I have two issues with the new mutants. Firstly, they never born with their powers as they got it from the Phoenix Force. So they could be something more along the lines of the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man etc. Secondly, what is going to happen when the Phoenix Force reconstitute itself? Are they all of them going to keep their powers or just a percentage?
Science time! In a cell, only a percentage of genes are actually doing anything. In cells that require specific proteins, the gene for them is active, while the gene for others aren't, and until puberty, the genes for all the wonderful changes bodies go through will not be active until puberty hits and activates them (and in the case of mutants, activates the X-Gene).
So, Its possible that Wanda's hex merely 'deactivated' the X-Gene, and the Phoenix reactivated it, meaning all these people were mutants already but without an active X-Gene.
There have been a few seen that have powers that are past puberty such in college or work. Jake from AvX: Consequences was well past puberty even before Decimation.
