Batman Beyond: Two Most Famous Jokerz Cameo

In the midst of the mindcontrol-induced suicide bombing campaign against Gotham organised by the Joker King, Doug Tan, Gotham's heroes are forced to team up to try and save as many people as they can. This results in the new Catwoman and the (publically-outed former superhero) Dick Grayson bumping into a more established pair of legacy characters than NeoCatwoman...





DeeDee facts! Their appearance is based on a rag-doll fashion that was going on in Japan at the time RotJ was made, and they were voiced by Melissa Joan Hart, aka the star of Sabrina the Teenage Witch tv show.

Short version. Batman and Nightwing are out on a case, chasing after the Joker who has kidnapped Alfred for some reason. Because "he's so unusued to working with a partner again", Batman forgets that Nightwing is directly behind him, so when he ducks out of the way of a gun barrage that Joker has aimed at Bruce, Dick catches the whole thing, and ends up hideously wounded. Because he's chasing the Joker, Bruce leaves Dick behind and Dick though treated eventually, loses an eye as a result.

The problem being if Bruce hasn't worked with a partner in ages, this MUST be after what happens to Tim in the flashback in "Return of the Joker", but since he's chasing the Joker, it CAN'T be after the flashback in "Return of the Joker", so it's just bloody stupid.

Wow, hmm, even without the awkward continuity issue, that explanation for Dicks battle damage leaves Bruce looking very incompetent...

Even in the run up to 10,000 Clowns there was a really... awkward scene that didn't make Bruce look that ethical.

That being, Bruce acknowledges that he's have better tech than the police for years, and that he's going to start giving the GCPD better equipment and protection... while smugly saying that he won't be giving them stuff entirely at the same standard of his own stuff.

Even though I think he mentions how the GCPD has problems with corruption (and Bruce's tech might have been sold on to gangsters by crooked cops, for example), deliberately withholding better protection from police is kind of amazingly... bad on Bruce's part isn't it?

Compared to regular DCU Bruce, who routinely updated the GCPD and Bludhaven PD's stuff because he wanted them to be safe.

You're assuming that the stuff he uses can be mass produced economically enough to supply any entire cities police.

I love the idea of Dick taking one hit too many and eventually evolving into a Fury-ish char...but UGH the whole 'Hush Beyond' arc BLARGH...my roommate likes that mess...even after I pointed out how it contradicted ROTJ.

Hush Beyond infuriated me on a number of lessons, mostly for reasons that, as a Cass Cain fan who suffered through Beechen's Robin and Teen Titans runs, I'd come to expect from him.

That is, knowing enough canon to credibly reference, but at the same time enough of a lack of respect for it that he'd just flaunt how much he is using bits to just establish his own ideas.

Such as Hush 2 effectively wiping out all of Terry's rogues gallery, including the villains who reformed (such as Arsenal, who was the step-dad of an established friend of Terry, Max and Dana's) and their families (including said friend of Terry's, without any on-panel reaction to said death).

The Joker King and it's preceeding storylines did a lot of fix what he'd already smooshed up though, such as bring back Mad Stan (Hush said he'd killed him, but Stan was just out of town for a few weeks and baffled as to why people thought he was dead), for example.

And the disgusting thing about the whole scene with Bruce/Dick in 'Hush Beyond'? Could have been fixed with one change in the script. Swap out 'Joker' for somebody...ANYBODY else, and the scene would have worked.

My head canon is that it wasn't Joker, it was a cross dressing Harley wanting revenge for her poor departed Mr J, or she hired somebody to pretend to the Joker and nab Alfred. She knew about Batman's ID thanks to ROTJ, ect. Still got holes but better than what we got in the books.

And the whole killing off Terry's rogues when the original writers/producers went out of their way to avoid rehashing the old Bat Rogues, and wanted to give Terry his own set of villains even setting up Ten to be his own version of Catwoman. Beechen pretty much was saying he 'respected' the Toon Canon on one hand...while actively destroying it with the other.

I know they weren't very deep characters to begin with from the Return of the Joker movie, but I never pegged them to ever want to be suicide bombers.
