"There are some people who think Bathos is, by its nature, bad. We are not those people. Comic deflation of genre excess is a good thing, Sez Us." -- Kieron Gillen

So those guys are the Skrulls who attacked Kate and Noh-Varr back in issue 1. The team subdues them, only to discover that they're not really Skrulls at all but rather a species called the Skifflefuffles.

I have no idea what's supposed to be going on in that middle panel.

At a diner, the team meets Prodigy, who's been tracking them down.

He tells them about the events of the previous issue, where Tommy was abducted by an eerie paranormal entity wearing Patriot's costume. A forensics analysis of the site of the abduction allows Loki to mystically trace the entity's trail to another dimension, but he doesn't have the power to actually transport them there. Miss America, on the other hand, does, as she reveals her power to create dimensional portals.

No matter what else anybody can say about this series, it is an undeniable fact that "Skifflefuffle" is the greatest name since "Bob Loblaw."

It sounds like the Hogwarts House that didn't quite make the final cut.

When you're beaten by the "bumbling badger of mediocrity," you've sunken pretty low.

I haven't had a chance to pick up the latest issue, but I really liked Prodigy in #7. Young Avengers has been just a little too twee and darling for my taste, so having him in there as a more blunt and serious character helps give it a bit of balance.

I really need to read this series. Its so odd that Gillian's own iron man run hasn't been this awesome (stark seven aside.)

Was their any reason why Kate stopped smooching Eli other than comics?

Eli got put on the bus because Heinberg said so and because someone wanted to use him elsewhere. Where, exactly, no-one knows. So there's your answer. Basically 'comics', also that teens are fickle things at the best of times.

I think this would have been more interesting with the Xartans, since they have an existing enmity with the Skrulls and it would have been fun to have a fanboyishness grow out of _that_. But of course when writers use previously established ideas, they don't get to come up with silly names.

Oddly enough, the Twitter page most convinced how this is still the legacy of the Avengers team. Those snarks back and forth, how is that not the Tony, Cap, Clint, Thor etc. interactions of the old days?

Also, I picture Dazzler as the Kylie Minogue of the 616 universe.

Also also, Noh-Varr's online handle being both super-relevant and a Beastie Boys ref.

Honestly, I'm liking this and Secret Avengers more than the 'main three' Avengers books at the moment. And I'm liking this more than Heinberg's YA stuff. To me, it always just felt like Heinberg was writing standard Avengers stories with a teen cast, whereas with this, it's about maybe the best reflection of what it's like to be a teen in the Marvel Universe since Runaways Vol 1 and 2.

To be fair to Heinberg, his Young Avengers came about at a time when there wasn't a good standard Avengers title. Disassembled has just happened, and New Avengers felt more like a street-level team-up book than a real avengers title. I remember someone commenting at the time "When your junior team book is dealing with Kang the Conqueror and a Kree-Skrull War, and your adult team book is dealing with Sauron and Silver Samurai, something is wrong." Coming out with standard Avengers stories in that climate probably helped the book more than anything.

A fair point. I still feel like the characters never really felt enough like teens, though, by contrast to the newer run, and I still think Gillen and McKelvie have actually mastered the idea of making them sound and (most importantly) look like real teenagers. I mean, compare and contrast these kids (especially Miss America, who still manages to have a themed outfit that *isn't* a superhero costume) to the 'civvie clothes' they're wearing in the scanned pages of Teen Titans from the other day. To me, it's just refreshing that they've done the work and done it correctly, rather than them being copy-pasted and shrunk versions of adult superheroes, which is easily a complaint I could level at some of YA's competitors.

Also, I picture Dazzler as the Kylie Minogue of the 616 universe.

It seems like every time a teenager in the Marvel Universe wants to go see live music, it's a Dazzler concert.

I mean, X-23 and her cousin went to one in her 2nd miniseries, for one thing.

This series...you could take these characters and put them into any situation, and they'd be awesome.

I want to see them doing politics now...with pancakes...or Korean barbecue.

On that last page, all of the different realities behind Patriot, one of them kind of looks like Speed Racer universe

And now I'd kinda kill for a Wacky Races style Young Avengers issue
