Huh, this actually looks way better than I thought it'd be. And I think the treatment of Billy and the Shazam power here may be better than it's been in the JL backups.
I agree. I was a little worried when I saw the set-up for this but in the end Billy was NOT taken advantage of and made Constantine look a little bit of the fool. It also used something few writers do and thats the idea that the non-chosen ones can't handle the Power of Shazam. That one fact alone when thrown out there now and again should be more than enough to show how special Billy and his "family" are (and then you have writers like Gail Simone, who though I hate to say it, had Black Alice take one of the Marvels - never said who - powers and was able to use them very well the first try but then I always said Black Alice was a bit of an anti-villain Sue, she was even able to take the Spectre's power from him).
I wish Johns would use this version of Billy. A version of Billy who is actually quite intelligent for his age and doesn't let him self be talked down to (as much as I hated how Grant Morrison treated Mary in Final Crisis, I LOVED how alternate world Billy was used in FC: Superman Beyond where young Billy, without any power was not only quite heroic but also the smartest "hero" in the story).
I like the way Constantine describes the power tearing him apart trying to escape. He would have popped like a grape if Billy hadn't taken the power back.
But really, he's got the crazy eyes in the second panel, second page. I dig it. A lot.
This is actually pretty intriguing, I might be compelled to pick it up. I'm not good at keeping up with story arcs as they happen (Lazy...), but their interesting dynamic has piqued my interest.
Plus my large soft spot for Justice League Dark members' various shenanigans...
But the Teen Titans had all the fun. I want everyone on the deck when the hands get dealt - the Justice Leagues, all the villains, ARGUS, the Suicide Squad. I'd like to see Nightwing in the super-duds, see how he fills it out.
The uh, role, I mean. Of Superman. There's your charisma power right there.
