Green Lantern: New Guardians #23
Aug. 31st, 2013 09:36 amFour pages from GL: NG, where arc villain Relic strikes a major blow to the Lantern defenses.
C is for cookie, and S is for spoilers!
One line Summary:
Relic destroys the Blue Lantern battery, forcing Kyle's crew to haul butt with a weakened Saint Walker in tow:

I guess the White Lantern ring's bound to resurrect them sometime after Lights Out. Maybe there is some hope in sight, at that.
Food for Thought: With something like this, there's bound to be casualties, but when was the last a time a new villain effectively established himself as a threat without killing anyone?

Date: 2013-08-31 09:28 am (UTC)No Star Sapphire book, even though it'd give DC another female-led book to hype.
No Indigo Tribe book (ok, that's unlikely due to the language thing)
And no Blue Lantern book.
I wouldn't hold out hope for a revival... apparently books about anti-heroes are "k00l".
(About the only good part about this is the opportunity for someone to bring more of a GLTAS spin on Walker's portrayal. But considering the mishandling of the Question....)

Date: 2013-08-31 12:58 pm (UTC)Only if they gave a damn good explanation as to why there are no male Star Sapphires wearing equivlaently revealing costumes. The notion that only females are capable of expressing love worthy to be in the SS (Hmmm... I begin to see why that might be a tougher cell as a group nickname than GL) to be bloody annoying.
Are the Indigo's properly compassionate anyway? I thought there was something about them being made up of those incapable of feeling compassion and being FORCED to be Lanterns... never mind that their idea of compassion includes "mercy" killing those injured who weren't even guaranteed to die.

Date: 2013-08-31 01:01 pm (UTC)The fact they go for the killing rather than the depowering is past tired though.

Date: 2013-08-31 01:33 pm (UTC)Yeah, I wish they could have just depowered them. These guys never did anything to hurt anyone - they just wanted to bring hope to the universe and maybe extol the virtues of a flying superpowered Babar.
With that in mind, what do you think they should have done instead of genocide and aside from depowering?

Date: 2013-08-31 02:18 pm (UTC)Red: They FEEL great rage/hate (which isn't the same thing, but anyway)
Orange: Larfleeze was greedy, but the ring comes across as more of an addiction than anything. It MAKES him greedier.
Yellow: They CAUSE great fear, but they don't apparently feel it.
Green: They can overcome fear (through willpower, one must assume). But does that mean someone who overcomes something that isn't fear is not qualified?
Blue: The official diktat is that they "inspire" hope. The fact that they feel it (one would have to) is irrelevant.
Indigo: As you state, they basically have the emotion forced upon them.
Violet: They feel great love.
So we have three pairs (and Green, which was grandfathered in):
Red/Violet: Feel the emotion.
Orange/Indigo: Have the emotion imposed on them, whether they desire it or not.
Yellow/Blue: Cause the emotion in others.
Pick one, guys....
(As for the male Sapphs... it'd take someone at DC to actually care beyond short-term sales. I'd give it a few more years)

Date: 2013-08-31 02:41 pm (UTC)I wish they'd explore more ring combos in the future! They could fill out a lot of arcs that way.

Date: 2013-08-31 03:06 pm (UTC)Still, I'd want to see what happens when someone dual-wields or triple-wields a ring. War of the Green Lanterns comes to mind.

Re: Consider this...
Date: 2013-08-31 05:34 pm (UTC)Also, the rings don't select their targets based solely on emotion, but also the bias of the guy or girl who leads the corps. As I recall, red lantern rings were originally going specifically to people with anger towards Sinestro Corps members, because Atrocitus was planning a strike on Sinestro himself. The blue lanterns were holding a one at a time recruitment drive, wher Saint Walker (who, I believe, was from Sector 1) went to Sector 2 and recruited Brother Warth, whose job it became to go to Sector 3 and recruit the next one and so on. The Green Lantern rings were also being guided by Mogo, which is why you don't see a lot of evil Green Lanterns despite the fact overcoming fear and having a strong will are not inherently good guy traits.
The Zamarons, if I recall correctly, have always been big on female superiority, right? So of course they'd recruit females exclusively.
Re: Consider this...
Date: 2013-08-31 07:07 pm (UTC)Red and Violet, at the extreme ends of the spectrum, require the ringholder to hold extreme views. They require all-consuming "emotion" and an intensity that the others don't. As you move towards the middle it becomes less encompassing and allows for less extreme devotion. LIke you said, yellow and blue don't need to necessarily feel hope or fear, merely inspire it in others, and green, right in the middle, has no emotional disposition one way or the other, as willpower isn't inherently a "good" trait at all. Hypothetically somoene of any morality and any rationality could utilize green.
And i guess orange and indigo could be some sort of middle ground between the two? I can't think of how, but whatever.
