Aquaman Rebirth & #1

"Aquaman is one of the sort of big six of DC. He's not a Batman or Superman, but he's absolutely one of the first division heroes. And I've always liked him for that reason. And I like him for the same reason, I think, that I like a lot of cosmic characters, because he's not just a guy who puts on a costume — he's a guy from another world. He's a guy from Atlantis.
He's not wearing a superhero costume. He's wearing royal chain mail.
And he's not just a hero who saves people and does good deeds. He's got this responsibility. He rules Atlantis. He rules a whole nation. He controls the sea, which is two-thirds of the planet. He's the most global hero" - Dan Abnett

The Hatter versus the Doom Patrol

Love it or hate it (I sadly lean toward the latter of the two), Gail Simone's impact on post-2000s DC is immeasurable. It was she who made the Birds of Prey soar out from under the shadow of the Bat; she who finally gave Bane some manner of dignity and characterization to lift him out of his post-Knightfall slump; and she who took several villains that no one remembered anymore, assembled them all under the name of an equally forgotten team, and made both awesome beyond imagination.
All told, there are probably a hundred other accomplishments to her name, but there is one that remains of particular interest to me: what is arguably the most badass Mad Hatter appearance in the history of DC.
(Okay, so there's not really much competition, but still.)
It's a moment that's been talked about quite a few times on S_D, but I find it sadly unposted (perhaps a victim of the Great Purge?). So I present it here, in all its creepy glory.
( Behind the cut: Don't mock the turtle. )

Four pages from GL: NG, where arc villain Relic strikes a major blow to the Lantern defenses.
C is for cookie, and S is for spoilers!
( Look at the stars. No hope in sight. )
Food for Thought: With something like this, there's bound to be casualties, but when was the last a time a new villain effectively established himself as a threat without killing anyone?

Morrison gets Superman, Evidence #132

"He's got a little bit of a sense of humor, and he's tough again. You can knock him down, and he'll get up. I think the best thing that it's done ultimately is to get rid of that weird emo Superman that was around for a long time. He was constantly fighting against using his powers and was kind of angst-driven. There are so many great characters in comics that are angst-driven that we don't need Superman to be one was well. If anything great has come out of this for the future of how Superman is done, I think it's that the current Superman is proactive and Clark Kent's a little more feisty. And I think the character relationships have been busted up a bit too, and it's more fun because of that." -- Grant Morrison on his New 52 take on Superman
Here are four pages from Action Comics #18, Morrison's final issue, in which he once again manages to distill the essence of Superman and show us what its all about...

For Free Comic Book Day, Boom! Studios has released a prologue to Abnett and Lanning (and main artist Brad Walker)'s upcoming series The Hypernaturals.
"It is the far future; the human race has finally colonized the galaxy, preserving an era of prosperity that's only possible because of The Hypernaturals. They're a celebrated, galaxy-wide superhero task force that keeps the peace. That is, until they all mysteriously vanish. Now, as the galaxy teeters on the brink of chaos, it's up to a group of retired and long forgotten Hypernaturals - and their novice recruits - to save the galaxy from complete destruction."
