Like at all. This news came the same day they cancelled Scarlet Spider, and they are using that ".#" numbering. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth that they are giving a few issues, then walking away. Just enough to keep Peter fans from truly revolting at the fact we lost Agent Venom and Kaine, and are left with 'Otto' stories.
I hope it happens, but I have the feeling it's going to be some 'alternate reality' or some such that won't have any bearing at all on what Marvel's doubled down as their 'Superior' stories.
At least Slott isn't working on any of the 5 Peter stories in those.
There wasn't an announcement. Just in the crop of solicits released today, Scarlet Spider #25 is listed as the "Devestating Last Issue." Stating Kaine tried to be a Hero and failed, yadda yadda Exec decision bullocks.
Also as a blow to fans of Flash Thompson, the Solicit for Inferior Spider-Man #23 shows Venom leaving Flash, and #24 shows the new Inferior Venom as a enemy to ISM a month after his title is cancelled.
With the rumours about the Ultimate Universe ending in Cataclysm & Miles jumping universes, I wouldn't be surprised if Kaine's book was being cancelled so they could relaunch with Miles as the new Scarlet Spider instead.
...Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with that at all. I know Kaine has his fans and the book looked interesting enough, but I like Miles a LOT more as a character.
Eh, there's no reason it has to be mutually exclusive. I love miles, but the problem I have with the idea of him moving into the 616 is that I also adore the supporting cast of USM and it makes me sad to think of Miles as the sole survivor.
Especially since I'll be blaming Miles if the Ultimate Universe does end.
"Hey, the Ultimate Universe lasted 10 years without Miles. Two years with him, they cancel the line & have Galactus kill everyone. Just saying."
Yeah. That'll be me.
On a less Miles-hating note, the whole "Time is broken" thing Marvel are running with seems like an easy way to grab a few characters & have them jump over.
I think that even if his supporting cast came with him, the character's narrative would likely become all about him being from another universe and how he adjusts to that. Not that it couldn't be done well, but it's not a really what I'd want for the character.
My hope is that if all the other Ultimate titles get canned USM continues and just gets to running the rest of the universe in the periphery of Miles' story.
Given the number of minis they're doing for Cataclysm - some hinting that Gah Lak Tus is coming back in addition to 616 Galactus arriving, I think it's basically going to be a massive bait and switch to just let them relaunch books again and reorganise talent, because whilst I'd argue that Ultimate Spider-Man is great and Ultimate X-Men is very strong under Brian Wood, the Ultimates has taken a nose-dive.
So.. Yeah. I think it's leading to another relaunch. The Ultimate Universe is Bendis' baby, at this point, literally something like twelve years of his life.
the Ultimate Universe could be ending? dammit, Ultimate Spider-Man has been the only Marvel title I've still been reading. I don't really care all that much to read about 616 Marvel anymore.
I think it's a bit random to have 5 .1 issues out if Inferior is still on-going, but from the solicits, I think ISM 25 or 26 will be the final issue, and Amazing 701 will be out before the end of January.
Hopefully without Slott, Ramos or Stegman involved.
The Marvel NOW! 2014 image does feature Peter in it after all, and apparently there's some movie coming out next year?
Given how Marvel kept on promoting "One Moment in Time" with various wedding-related imagery I'm not holding my breath for Peter Parker to return this soon. If I had to guess it'd be around the time the new movie comes out but even then I wouldn't place any bets; the general consensus I get is that Marvel is more focused on trades nowadays and they'll probably end up doing a couple of miniseries for the bookstores.
Either flashbacks or out of continuity. Then again there is that Spider-Man: Family Business graphic novel coming out next year. If it's in continuity, Peter better damn well come back because finding out about a long lost sister should not involve the guy who stole his damn body!
Okay, long lost sister is a silly story but I'm willing to give this a try. Might be false sister too. Sounds like the story is set with Peter in it, not Ock. Would be funny if after the OGN she re-appears in Inferior and be the one to find out Peter isn't Peter.
Since you mentioned it, can we all talk about how weird Family Matters sounds? Because it sounds really weird. I like Mark Waid an all, but I don't think he's infallible, and I always got the impression that everyone had just quietly agreed that Peter's parents being spies never happened, since Peter Parker's origins being anything but mundane is super stupid.
Actually I never minded that Peter's parents were spies, hell, I was hoping that was the big secret in Amazing Spider-Man, that they were SHIELD agents and thus we got a connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I think I would have preferred that in Amazing Spider-Man over the weird implications that Spidey's parents may have been tied into his powers somehow.
Really though, I've never liked the idea that Peter Parker's family is/was in any way notably or badass takes away from the everyman aspect. It feels more natural to me for them to just be regular people. His parents being spies just feels to me like a needless addition.
I'm beginning to suspect that, starting in January, Marvel will be publishing a new bi-monthly Amazing Spider-Man title, playing opposite Slott's Superior Spider-Man book. By SSM #25, Otto will end up having the breakdown we've all been waiting for and, in the guise of Spider-Man, will abandon any pretense of being a hero and become a full-on tyrant, turning NYC into his own personal kingdom and taking out the Avengers, X-Men and any other heroes in his way. Meanwhile, Peter Parker will be in his own book, back among the living(I'll let the writers hash out how) and forced to live as a fugitive while Otto drags the names of both Spider-Man and Peter Parker into the mud. By the end of 2014, we'll have a big final battle between Peter and Otto, with Peter finally claiming the mantle of the One True Spider-Man, but forced to rebuild his reputation as a hero from the ground up as thanks to Otto the world thinks Spider-Man is the worst villain this side of Red Skull.
However, I'm not so certain it'll happen by #25. Yes, Inferior Spider-Man is still selling because of minimum order requirements and counting 'all sales' to stores, not counting store sales to readers.
I suspect the Peter Parker 'stories' are nothing more than a 'playcate the masses' bid for people who are sick of all this inferior stuff. I mean, the other two 'spider' titles are cancelled by December for 'possible' reboots..assuming Slott doesn't want them for his Inferior titles like he's doing with Venom.
At this point? I'm honestly believing that all of this Inferior junk is salting the Earth to try and kill the success of ASM 2 and 3 or however many Fox is running, all so they can get the rights back at a lower price and bring Spidey/Peter into the Marvel cinematic-universe.
Then once they get the rights back, we'll have the epic throwdown like you've described.
Superior Spider-Man is still one of Marvel's more successful titles, and it's currently selling more than Amazing Spider-Man did.
Furthermore, the people who still read comics only make a fraction of the people who watch the superhero movies, so I don't think the comic sales would have any effect on how successful the movies are regardless.
5? Captain America, Batman, Martian Manhunter, Barry Allen, Superboy, Kid Flash, Bucky, Human Torch, apparently Jean Grey... Those are just off the top of my head.
Remember when New Coke came out and everyone thought it was a big mistake and so they brought the original Coca-Cola back as "Classic" for a while and New Coke just sort of faded away?
