A funny interlude in Attack on Titan
Sep. 22nd, 2013 05:57 pmAttack on Titan is a series not known for its humor--and for good reason! There is little of it. But this scene from chapter 15 just amuses the hell out of me. It's reminiscent of Asterix the Legionary.
If you don't know anything about Attack on Titan, no worries, you don't need to. All you need to know is that a bunch of teenagers have enlisted as cadets into the military, and on their first day (I think?) are being yelled at by the drill sergeant (or whatever his in-universe title is). The latest person to be yelled at is Conny (or Connie) Springer, who did the salute wrong... and then the drill sergeant lays eyes on Sasha.
Read right-to-left.

Sasha is great, though.

Date: 2013-09-23 02:44 am (UTC)I think that's actually present here. Well, she's not "really really" reluctant to share half, but she does seem to be reluctant. The panel before she snaps the potato in two has the sound effect "chi" (apologies if you already know katakana)--or perhaps more colloquially in English, "tsk". It's her grumbling about what she feels she has to do.
Does she? I haven't seen the anime, but in the manga I don't recall her getting to do much, aside from taking on a titan with a bow and arrow.
Yeah... yeah. One of my big gripes with One Piece, much as I like it (I really want Robin to learn haki and be able to just tear about logia fruit users!).
Speaking of Attack on Titan's women, I'm not sure how I feel about Mikasa. On the one hand, I usually really like characters who are wholly devoted to someone else, like she is to Eren (and it is a somewhat amusing inversion of gender roles for her to be so concerned with protecting him); but on the other hand, it's really uncomfortable to have a woman whose entire identity is based around a man. If she had some other characterization, it might be better, but as it is, her entire personality seems to be about Eren.

Date: 2013-09-23 03:12 am (UTC)For Sasha's badassness, it's mainly fighting a Titan without her 3D-gear, which is shown to be downright suicidal. And jumping on the Titan to make sure it gets blinded so the child can escape.
It's one thing to be like Mikasa and Levi, to take down Titans like it's nothing. It's another kind of courage and badassery to be like Sasha, a normal scared human who decides to fight an unstoppable monster. Not to mention she did graduate the top of her class.
For Mikasa, I do feel the same ambivalence. But she's not wholly reliant on Eren for her identity. She acts as a inspirational leader when everyone was demoralized. Was willing to cut down a corrupt merchant to save her fellow soldier and citizens. She was willing to do her duty and fight the Female titan when Eren wasn't.
She uses Eren is an inspirational example, and cares (obsessively) for him. But she's capable of fighting for herself (which is shown when Eren "dies").
I also think a larger point of the series is how Eren, Armin, and Mikasa rely on each other. They each have special qualities, but they work their best together. Armin may be the smartest man in the room and Mikasa the toughest soldier, but without Eren they wouldn't even be in the Survey corps. He's the heart.
Mikasa really reminds me of Homura from PMMM. They both really love a character, and that relationship ultimately made both characters stronger as people. I do think Mikasa's relationship is a bit of a crutch that holds her back in a lot of ways. You can say the same for Homura.
Anyways that was long.

Date: 2013-09-23 06:55 am (UTC)The funny thing is, Eren is actually the least competent member of the trio. He's weaker than Mikasa and he's dumb as rocks compared to Armin. Aside from a certain spoilerific trait, he's nothing special. Except for one thing: his will is unbreakable. It doesn't matter how much he suffers, he just never gives up.

Date: 2013-09-23 01:08 pm (UTC)Eren does serve as an inspiration thanks to his determination. It's somewhat infectious.

Date: 2013-09-24 11:40 pm (UTC)Is it perfect? No. Can I guarantee you'll like it? No
What I can say is that it's a really compelling drama about humanity fighting against extinction. I can say it's a series that's good at bringing up the tension and coming up with surprises. I can say it's characters are really well-realized and likable. I can say the series is about as brutal as Game of Thrones when it comes to killing off characters.
It has flaws. It's pacing can be off. It's also not the most subtle series in the world. It's aimed at a pre-teen to teenage audience, so the drama and action gets over the top, sometimes to the point of narm.
But it's a well-written, well planned out series. Both thematically and plot-wise. I think it deserves it's popularity.
