Attack on Titan is a series not known for its humor--and for good reason! There is little of it. But this scene from chapter 15 just amuses the hell out of me. It's reminiscent of Asterix the Legionary.

If you don't know anything about Attack on Titan, no worries, you don't need to. All you need to know is that a bunch of teenagers have enlisted as cadets into the military, and on their first day (I think?) are being yelled at by the drill sergeant (or whatever his in-universe title is). The latest person to be yelled at is Conny (or Connie) Springer, who did the salute wrong... and then the drill sergeant lays eyes on Sasha.

Read right-to-left.

Ah Attack on Titan, the manga that would go on to become the biggest anime series of the year. (Seriously the first opening song to it has become a major internet meme.)

The funny thing is, it took a couple of months before someone set it to Zeta Gundam. You'd think someone would've done that earlier..

(But then, there was this, so can't really grouse.)

Ah yes, this scene.

I am hopelessly addicted to Attack on Titan and I don't even like anime that much. ._.

Sasha is great, though.

To reference another meme...

Enjoyed the little nuance the anime put in where Sasha was really really reluctant to share half.

And I enjoy later in the series where Sasha does pretty badass things. Especially in a genre (shonen) where female characters get shafted a lot.

That's my central discomfort about Mikasa too, to be honest. I love that her incredible drive and single-minded focus is what makes her excel at nearly everything she puts her mind to, but I dislike how much her entire world rests on a single person. I doubt this will happen (it's anime) but I'd like to see her move on and become her own person, separate from Eren.

Eren is her only surviving family member though... I get that some people don't like how she's devoted to just one guy, but it isn't like it isn't justified in the story and stated that it isn't exactly healthy either.

I see what you mean now, with that panel. The anime does do a good job of bringing out the best in the source material I think. The added material in episode 24 really brings out the transition from Eren in that episode and Eren in the later part of the manga.

For Sasha's badassness, it's mainly fighting a Titan without her 3D-gear, which is shown to be downright suicidal. And jumping on the Titan to make sure it gets blinded so the child can escape.

It's one thing to be like Mikasa and Levi, to take down Titans like it's nothing. It's another kind of courage and badassery to be like Sasha, a normal scared human who decides to fight an unstoppable monster. Not to mention she did graduate the top of her class.

For Mikasa, I do feel the same ambivalence. But she's not wholly reliant on Eren for her identity. She acts as a inspirational leader when everyone was demoralized. Was willing to cut down a corrupt merchant to save her fellow soldier and citizens. She was willing to do her duty and fight the Female titan when Eren wasn't.

She uses Eren is an inspirational example, and cares (obsessively) for him. But she's capable of fighting for herself (which is shown when Eren "dies").

I also think a larger point of the series is how Eren, Armin, and Mikasa rely on each other. They each have special qualities, but they work their best together. Armin may be the smartest man in the room and Mikasa the toughest soldier, but without Eren they wouldn't even be in the Survey corps. He's the heart.

Mikasa really reminds me of Homura from PMMM. They both really love a character, and that relationship ultimately made both characters stronger as people. I do think Mikasa's relationship is a bit of a crutch that holds her back in a lot of ways. You can say the same for Homura.

Anyways that was long.

The funny thing is, Eren is actually the least competent member of the trio. He's weaker than Mikasa and he's dumb as rocks compared to Armin. Aside from a certain spoilerific trait, he's nothing special. Except for one thing: his will is unbreakable. It doesn't matter how much he suffers, he just never gives up.

Well, that's the point: he's the leader. He inspires others with his courage, his determination and his ironclad dedication to any task. Mikasa is worth 100 other soldiers and Armin is brilliant, but many of the Survey Corps look to Eren for guidance. Even without that special trait, Eren's contribution is his dedication. He will never, ever give up.

He's not really a very good leader either. Look what happened in the first battle of Trost. Jean, post-character development, is shaping up to be a good leader though.

Eren does serve as an inspiration thanks to his determination. It's somewhat infectious.

Yea, Eren is not the leader. He's got an important role in the squad, arguably the heart, but you wouldn't put him in command.

The apparent justification for this is that her (first) One Bad Day (and it was a really, really bad day matched only by the Titans' attack) really messed her up. On the plus side, it apparently broke her natural mental limiters too, which is why she's such a capable combatant. And given what happened in her backstory and in the first chapter, it's not hard to see why Mikasa is so devoted to Eren, to the point that even Eren is uncomfortable with it.

Yeah, well, Eren needs to GET OVER HIS DAMN SELF. Once or twice, I get it. But when you wake up in a cart with dozens dead and your friend saved your life, your reaction should be "Thank you!" not "OH, NOT AGAIN!". I like Eren, but sometimes he can be an unappreciative jerk.

TBF, in that situation he wasn't angry with Mikasa as much as with himself. He was the Female Titan's target, so he thinks everyone's death is on him. Which is all kinds of messed up.

One thing in her favor is she's not about, say, listening to him per se or desiring praise. She's more about protecting him whether he wants it or not, and she recognized he resents it, and their relationship is portrayed as pretty messed up all in all.

There's a pretty funny doujin revolving around Sasha's doomed attempts to befriend Mikasa. During one chapter she offers the small half of her bread loaf to Mikasa. Mikasa simply snatches away the bigger half.

The pedant in me is shouting "You can't have a smallest half!!"

A "half" must be exactly the same size as the OTHER half left over, otherwise it's not a half, it's some other fraction

Sorry, just had to say that.

What does it say about this series that even this humorous element has a depressing backstory? Sasha is a big eater now because she had to endure a food shortage in the past. Living your days worried if you'll have enough food to survive isn't fun at all and can lead to a fixation with food in real life.

To make a long story short, mankind has been driven to near extinction by a bunch of man eating giants and the survivors are currently living in a single huge walled city. I can't possibly do the series justice in one post.

Buncha Titans- giants who eat people and who are *really* hard to kill (single weak spot. Hit anything else and they'll rapidly heal)- show up. People hid behind wall- or walls, rather, as there's three rings with a buncha land in between each. For 100 years, it's good. Then really big titan breaks open gate to the outermost wall!

There's still the inner walls, but the big titan is still around somewhere, so things become a lot more critical.

Well it was already a well-regarded cult-hit before the anime adaptation made it explode in popularity.

Is it perfect? No. Can I guarantee you'll like it? No

What I can say is that it's a really compelling drama about humanity fighting against extinction. I can say it's a series that's good at bringing up the tension and coming up with surprises. I can say it's characters are really well-realized and likable. I can say the series is about as brutal as Game of Thrones when it comes to killing off characters.

It has flaws. It's pacing can be off. It's also not the most subtle series in the world. It's aimed at a pre-teen to teenage audience, so the drama and action gets over the top, sometimes to the point of narm.

But it's a well-written, well planned out series. Both thematically and plot-wise. I think it deserves it's popularity.
