Once upon a time, Captain Marvel met Superman. Due to an evilly organized misunderstanding, fisticuffs ensued.

I do like how the guys go right to "RARG PUNCHING" and the girls are all "let's talk this out."

Oh, Mary. Gross. He's way older than than you.

And so, the day was saved not by violence, but by talking. And then by violence. But violence directed at the right people.

And we start things off with a nice upskirt of Mary.

Not a complaint, mind you, just an observation.

Panty shots tend to be of the most innocent character for some reason.

It was at least back in the day before thongs were popular with kids these days. so these things are just like shorts...that is something...right?

I forget what they're called, but yeah, they're more like short shorts than panties.

Yes, that's one word; just did a quick google and they're also known as trunks or, heaven help me, spankies.

They just love doing that to Mary (who's you know only supposed to be 16 tops). Her whole awful Countdown black costume with the tiny leather skirt seems to have been created just for the panty shots (of an underage girl).

That's not a bad look for Supregirl. Very... 80's, though. But not a bad look.

I'm pretty sure this was Supergirl's 70s look. She kept it until around 1982, when they gave her.....umm. Well, THIS is a very 1980s look. Think 'Flashdance', I guess.

Heh, you're right, very Flashdance, though the headband was a nod to her Kryptonian heritage.

I like her '70s costume. It suited her somehow.

Ah yes, the Sand Superman Arc. Probably one of the more head scratching moments in Superman Lore.

I don't know. There was an issue a friend of mine told me about. Just the cover, anyway.

It had Superman flinging a statue of himself at an incoming comet, with a caption that said something like "This is the last chance I have. Fly, Superman statue, fly!"

I remember when he first emerged, it was like something out of a wonderful horror story...the sand-statue emerging from Superman's silhouette in the desert, shambling away, faceless...

Oh, ferchrissakes -- that "I want to get to know that hunky Superman..." is just awful. It does nothing at all to advance the plot, while doing a real disservice to Mary Marvel's character. "I guess we girls might be saving two worlds through diplomacy or something, but what's really important is that I might get to meet that dreamy Superman." Like DC is worried that some silly reader might get the idea that Teenage Hero Girl is capable of, and interested in, intelligent, rational problem-solving -- and they need to make it extra clear that her real motivation is that she's a girl with a crush... Bleh.

There is a payoff to that at the end of the story. Unfortunately, that makes it a lot worse. I wouldn't have minded if she had just made an incidental comment or had a stray though about how Superman is pretty cute. After all, people do notice things like that and have crushes, even in serious situations. What they actually did, on the other hand, if you haven't read the story, you probably don't want to know.

Keep in mind that this was written by Gerry Conway, who didn't always have the best record when it came to writing female characters (though in Superman Vs. Wonder Woman, I think he did worse by Superman). And who seems to have been the go-to guy for superhero team-ups, for some reason.

Well, now I'm morbidly curious. What could/would Superman do back then that could be so bad? Kiss her?

I could imagine today's DC being capable of doing many awful things, but back then?

Superman vs. Wonder Woman is the one where he came off badly. When the obligatory "superheros fight before they team up scene" starts, he has an "I don't care if you're my friend, NOBODY hits me" moment where he gets REALLY pissed off at Diana (who doesn't exactly come off well, either), and when they lose sight of what they're doing so they can see who'd win a fight between them, he sucker punches Diana while she's trying to talk to him before the fight starts.

In this, he doesn't come off badly or do anything to encourage Mary. Conway just makes her look stupid. At the end of the story, she throws herself at Superman, to show her how foolish she looks, Supergirl throws herself at Captain Marvel, Mary protests because Cap is really just a kid, realizes what Supergirl is doing, gets embarassed and they all have a good laugh at Mary.

Well I much prefer this Supergirl/Mary working relationship than the one Grant Morrison gave them.

Which is funny because prior to Morrison, all MM/SG incarnations got along great - 70s era Shazam, Peter David's Linda Danvers and Mary, even in the DCAU comics where Mary appeared.

He didn't, but that was quite enough, don't you think? Especially considering it was the only in-continuity (well pre-reboot) meeting Kara Zor-El had with Mary Marvel since Crisis on Infinite Earths. And the only reason DC did the whole Evil/Black Mary Marvel thing was because Morrison told them he was going to make her evil so she could fight Supergirl (though he never told the editors she would be possessed so thus we had Countdown).

Well that's not a working relationship at all because Mary was possessed by Desaad and literally not herself.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Mary Marvel to go after Black Adam, since she's more familiar with his powers?

Although given Black Adam basically tells Supergirl how to defeat him...

I think trading off might work better if the two heroine's power sets weren't so similar.
