Galactus DID send her in unboosted and unassisted so Nova probably has no reason to believe that she's THAT outclassed powerwise (and given that Nova has Silver Surfer level powers.... )

Nova may have the Power Cosmic, but she also has that jobber aura that afflicts every herald not named Norrin Radd. That was pretty inevitable.

Perhaps the Big G wanted to teach Nova a bit of humility?

I've always considered that Invincible panel to not be "Invincible is funny" so much as "Invincible is a dick for no reason". Really, Mark, the only thing you noticed about Cage is that he's black? I wonder if he ever acted like this to The Astounding Wolf-Man.

You guys keep ragging on all the heralds being super under powered besides the Silver Surfer, but what about Firelord? In Annihilation, he's pretty dang baller, pretty much the only herald besides Noran that is (he took out that one Hive Mother or whatever).

Firelord was indeed badass in Annihilation. That doesn't really change the fact that he's the cosmic powered herald who lost to Spider-Man.

Ideally the heralds should always be the power houses but they're only ever brought in to make another character look better. Nova should have the same power level as Rachel with the phoenix force.

While I agree the Heralds should always be shown as very powerful. Phoenix as Jean fought Fire Lord easily and Rachel PHoenix was always played as being a minor cosmic entity during that time so it makes perfect sense that she'd be able to slap around a herald since later while the Phoenix was driving it managed to face Galactus for a bit even though it cost untold numbers of unborn souls.

Of course all this is depending on which version of the PHoenix they are using since it varies from minor cosmic entity, a force Death and Eternity will converse with and at times even more impressive.

Firelord's always been...respectable. Able to give Thor a good fight. Stardust is on that tier too, I'd say. I don't think either of them is on the Surfer's level, though.

Morg (even pre-magic waters) and the Fallen One were probably a match for the Surfer, in terms of raw power. But Norrin's just really exceptional in his speed and versatility. They've all got the Power Cosmic, but he wields it like a Pre-Crisis Green Lantern on steroids--he's got an answer for everything. Provided he's not being mopey and distracted, anyway.

I don't know that Nova was exceptionally under-powered for a Herald, but she sure got in trouble a lot. It seemed like Galactus forgot to give her 95% of her cosmic awareness--that, or the writers needed to put her in extra distress because she was the Gurl Herald.

The original explanation for Nova being so much weaker than the Surfer was that after every Betrayal Galactus would make the next herald slightly weaker than the last. Nova being the last herald created under that system ended up being the weakest of them.

Because when he found Morg he decided to grant him power nearly equal to the Surfer.

It is galling, though there are a couple good reasons reasons for Nova's lack of competence - she was a very new, green super hero when she made the Herald offer, and Galactus was at his absolute low ebb and voiced a concern about not being able to properly empower her. At the time my impression was he cosmiced-up her existing Human Torch powers so they didn't need oxygen and she could survive and travel in interstellar space, and not much else.

Of course,soon after she was able to play a game of connect-the-dots that wiped out an entire Skrull armada. So even a weak Herald should be vastly more powerful than the ragtag villains Rachel was used to facing in Excalibur.

Rachel usually kept her power dialed way down during her Excalibur tenure, though. Using it at full throttle risked damaging her memory and sending her out of control emotionally, plus she was worried about collateral damage and overkill. Nova was one of the few targets she was willing to hit as hard as possible. (Along with Necrom, and their fight wrecked a solar system.)

Most Excalibur villains were much weaker, but they had a habit of sneak-attacking or messing with Rachel's head, so she wouldn't get a chance to bring her offensive powers to bear. It's slightly surprising how often that worked on a telepath....

I will never not be annoyed that everyone else in that panel just takes Invincible's shitty jokes. Spider-Man of all people should be pretty quick to counter that Invincible is a fucking adjective as well as an invitation to get the shit beaten out of oneself. The fact that Spidey didn't get to give as good as he got was just vexing.
