"I told Al [Ewing], once we sent the issue out the door -- and you can take this as a compliment or not, depending on who you are -- but I think it's a compliment. It's the most Kurt Busiek-feeling issue of Avengers that we've put out in maybe ten years." - Editor Tom Brevoort
You know, for all the Land art (and that weird discussion about death not meaning anything which misses the point of what White Tiger is saying I think), I think Mr Brevoort is right, this feels more like an Avengers book than any I've seen posted here in a long time. A team of heroes fighting a monster and coming up with a new and innovative way to deal with it. And the absence of big leaguers (ie no Cap, no Thor, no Iron Man) but the presence of a long standing Avenger like Monica is nice.
And the quote is totally right....nothing MA is doing is reinventing the genre, but it's telling good old-fashioned superhero stories which is something we don't get a lot of anymore so I appreciate it a lot. :)
This features the Avengers fighting a monster/super-villain and working as a team, complete with an Epic Victory. What is this, 1987? This just became the best Avengers title (arguably not that hard at the moment, but still).
I love the way the description in the script is all "do it this way so as to not let the readers know who this is until further down the line." Someone should maybe have read through what they were releasing.
The writer did at least give an out that it was a tiny bit of Shuma-Gorath trying to establish a beachhead, so not very galling in my book. (And they did invoke an actual god to fight it mystically, so the method used was sensible as opposed to something like having Hank Pym make a scientific breakthrough in magic theory...)
Okay, this has just hit the point where the writing is good enough to make up for the Land art. I'm gonna start picking this up. (How sad is it that it's exciting to see the Avengers actually fighting a bad guy?)
Has White Tiger ever been connected to some supernatural god-entity before?
Eh, whatever. Now I just want to see White Tiger's "The Tiger" fighting Black Panther's Panther God. Is that gonna happen? Please tell me that's gonna happen.
Yeah it's been established for a while now that there is something living in the amulet. In Avengers Academy she had to make a deal with it at one point to allow it out to play one night a month or something been a while since I read the issue.
IIRC, the jade amulets she wears are pieces of a mystical tiger statue from K'un L'un, but I don't know if they ever delved into its exact origins or significance. Connecting it to an ancient god is not too much of a stretch, IMHO.
I think there was some connection to a Chinese Tiger God way back when (though it's been literally decades since I read the old comics I saw White Tiger in). Works well enough for me.
I'm kind of disappointed that Spider Hero took on the Ronin name in the next issue, I liked the idea of a character who wasn't concerned so much with they "brand/legacy" as they were simple anonymity. Plus I enjoyed seeing him antagonize Spider-Ock. Either way, if the leak abut the character's identity is accurate I don't expected the masquerade to hold up much longer anyway.
It wasn't really about brand name or legacy. Mystery Hero just hated the Spider-Hero costume, as did everyone else, and so they grabbed the Ronin outfit out of the attack since it was full-identity concealing. I get the impression MH didn't care whose old outfit they gave him, as long as it did the job. :)
Good thing he didn't visit the FF instead, he'd have gotten an old blue outfit and a paper bag for his head.
Lord, no kidding. She should, by rights, be one of the most powerful heroes around, and there's damn few people out there who can match her experience. It's really nice to finally see her kicking ass.
.... hmm... can't help but think of the MVC take of this... and they actually HAD the character Megaman... especially ANY of them! Like if it was Ra Moon... or Lumine/ Colonel Redips, Juno, Nebula Gray, that Noise comet from Starforce, or anyone who goes god-mod with the Model Ws...
The whole set up seems like the final boss of the Megaman ZX games. - Talks about life, death, and concepts of destiny? Check -Evil super bad god (or self proclaim) feeding off the misery and life of others? Check. -Hero's speech of hope giving fixing the hero's BSoD? Check.
I really need Greg Land to not be on art duties. I know he's a draw, I know he gets sales, but my GOD I cannot support a book that has him on pencils. Al Ewing seems to be the go-to-guy for solid comics right now. Between this and Loki, they're putting weight behind it. Great to see some "new blood" in the business (even if he's been working at 2000AD since the early/mid 2000s). This could have easily been fobbed off to Bendis or Hickman to get done, but they took a chance and it's paying off looks like.
I find it hard to believe that Greg Land is considered a drawcard these days, given his well known reputation.
I don't think it is the fact that Land is the artist that is bring the readers in, it would be the title itself and the writer more than Land. As it is, I know people who dropped Uncanny X-Men when Land became the artist from 2008-2011. A few of them were die hard X-Men fans.
Good news, Valerio Schiti, the artist from the Sif centric Journey into Mystery is taking over with issue 6. I don't know if it's permanent, but boy is it welcome.
Ok 1. That was awesome. 2. Really liking White Tiger and Power Man together. Seems like if anyone's powers compliment each other, it's their's. Also you know there's a shipfest with those two. It's as obvious as my laptop in front of me as I write this.

*the identity leaked pretty quickly so a quick google search will bring it up.
