Cute, but then I think about the story more. Then me being a fan clicks in and then the story irks me for lack of someone not being there amongst them. UGH. Why can't certain characters exist still?
This was a cute story, but I enjoyed almost all the other stories even more. Hurwitz/Adams' story was a mind-bender, Layman and Fabok did a strong first part for "Gothtopia," and "Twenty-Seven" was a really interesting, if more bittersweet interpretation of Batman's future.
I'm not sure how I feel about Twenty-Seven personally. The art was really cool and it is a pretty fun concept, but on the other hand, if the only legacy Bruce Wayne leaves behind is a bunch of clones, then he's kind of failed hasn't he? I thought that Batman's greatest accomplishment was supposed to be his followers, from Nightwing on down, who ensured that even if he could never really succeed in his mission there'd be someone else to carry on in his stead. So having Batman always be a Bruce Wayne just felt kind of wrongheaded to me. It'd work more for me if the clones were at least someone else's doing.
Also I was a little disappointed that the much vaunted first African America Robin turned out to be in the story for precisely one panel.
Was this supposed to be the setup for an ongoing or something though? Because while I might have some problems with it, it is still a pretty cool story.
I think it was intentionally made vague as to the whereabouts of the other characters. I think you can interpret it that with many of those other characters, like our modern Nightwings and the Robins we see in those sequences that some of them die, some of them grow up to be heroes on their own, some of them retire and decide to have their own life--but there's always a Bruce Wayne who becomes Batman.
His dedication to protecting others and his city is so great that it transcends death itself.
"...and then in 2024, the virulent Neo-Clench made everyone yellow and lantern-jawed, and all the scars they'd ever healed from suddenly reappeared on their bodies. Merry Chrestmas!"
There's something awesome about the fact that Tim is going gray faster than Dick, though. Or maybe Dick just uses hair dye. And butt implants.
