I think we need a bit more information. As "Awwww!" inducing as "I did it for love." is there's several stories where that motivation has resulted in some pretty horrible things.

But heck, give him a referral for Avengers Academy janitor staff or something. This feels like kicking puppies, even if it is later revealed as not so much.

Yeah, but he only joined the Hellfire Academy because Husk was there, and when he saw how bad they were he wanted to leave. And then he ended up saving both Quentin and Husk.

Yeah, I am not enjoying the whole, "Husk kinda went evil because she was just vaguely stressed out all of the sudden." I mean, if you want to make a mental breakdown and weak will for a charatcer, fine, but build it up and don't just "BOOM. EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS NOW."

It hasn't really been explained yet, but I think it might have had more to do with her powers; she was acting over-the-top evil and when Toad ripped all her skin off she went back to normal with no memories of what had happened.

yeah, her powers have been wonky since the decimation right? so i think her inability to ummm husk properly had to do with her mental state so it seems like it was an indication early on....

The fact that they're both abusive to each other doesn't make their relationship any less messed up.

Um did you read it? He wasn't abusive towards her. I didn't expect the relationship to last because it seemed like her being with him was part of her being nuts. She'll come out blame free being able to use the "I was nuts" card.

Toad didn't do anything wrong or aggressive to her at all. All he did was defend himself after asking for her to stop.

This is just so. . . blatant and bland, really. I see what they're trying to do here, but it's just so obvious that it's hard to feel anything for any of them (other than the "X-Men prove once again what colossal assholes they are" point).

Also, I can't help but be reminded of that time a poster here shared some 70s Avengers stuff that had Toad's obsession with the Scarlet Witch hit the "Wait, you're ugly now?!" thing, so the "I did it for love" thing doesn't build any sympathy in me.

So Rachel Summers who used to HUNT mutants as Hound doesn't believe in second chances? (or third or fourth even?)

Storm who amongst many, many other things RIPPED out a fellow mutants heart (granted, that person had two and it was to stop a bomb but still)...

Beast, well nyadnar17 put it best in their post...

and Wolverine who has a body count of thousands is giving Toad shit and then there's his whole "not surprised it didn't work out"...

Wow, MAGNETO treated Toad better than this. He at least was honest about being a dick to him.

Iceman recently went crazy and froze the entire world (in Astonishing X-Men).

Wolverine being an idiot about the staff seems to be a running theme. He tried to push Psylocke out for threatening Quire, when he himself offered to kill Teen!Cyke in front of the whole school. He's turfed Gambit for being a thief, then turns around and brings in Fantomex, who's a thief, an assassin, and who murdered a previous incarnation of one of the students.

I didn't used to hate the guy, but Marvel makes it so damn easy.

Toad has done some evil stuff. Back in the 90s in X-FORCE, he used some of the Stranger's machines to turn Karl Lykos into Sauron using Tanya Anderssen's life force, killing Tanya. Nasty stuff.

I don't think he's done anything more heinous than the other villains who have been allowed to join the X-Men.

But I think everyone just pretends that that didn't happen.

In this case, as in other of Jason Aaron's "romances" in this book, "love" = "various non-con elements played for laughs". In this case, "stealing Husk's cast-off skins to play out a creepy, stalkerish obsession".




I hope he stays gone. Get rid of Warbird and her hilarious sexual harassment schtick as well and I might pick up an issue out of sheer gratitude.

Except Husk has reciprocated Toad's affections. It's not like Warbird, who makes Iceman uncomfortable.



That panel was stupid, but it was a throwaway joke that wasn't brought up again (and for all we know it was just in Toad's imagination); it wasn't a consistent part of his characterization or storyline.

Considering that the panel came just as he had an armful of Husk's discarded skins he was supposed to throw away, the implication was that he'd been hoarding them and the panel was a flashback to what he was doing with them behind closed doors, so I don't give the idea that it was his imagination credence, nor do I think it's any less creepy for a character to hook up unknowing with someone who was obsessing over them.

If Husk had been aware of Toad's creepiness and then hooked up with him, I'd still think Jason Aaron was crap at blending humor and romance, but at least it wouldn't be as bad (if one ignores all of Toad's previous characterization, anyway). As it stands, it reads too much like the stalker getting the girl for me to think it's anything but gross.
