The underwear Peter is wearing in that beach fight do not look like it would work under skintight spandex. It would bunch up and be awful.

That's why Batman and Superman bucked the trend and wore them on the outside! It all makes sense now!!

IIRC there were even a few panels that showed Batman and/or superman stripped out of their costumes to reveal loose boxer shorts under those tights some how. Back when Artist seemed averse to drawing a male super hero in any kind of under wear that could remotely be called tight or form fitting.
