This flashback from AVENGERS #266 is a great Namor moment. I'd call it "cool," except it involves hot lava.

SECRET WARS II just ended, and Monica Rambeau (the Captain Marvel of the time) is explaining to the Silver Surfer what happened next.

Namor can act quickly and heroically, even when realizing "I may not have thought this through."

Is Buscema drawing Monica Rambeau like Pam Grier? That's how she was originally supposed to look.

That is the mark of a hero right there.

I mean, Namor is an asshole, we all know he's an asshole. He's an arrogant jackass whose constantly creeping on a happily married woman.

But when one of his teammates is about to plummet to his death in a pool of magma. What does he do?

He jumps right the fuck in to save him. No snark, no prompting from the other Avengers, he just leaps in and tosses him to safety, even if it means he's gonna become a fried scallop himself. Without even a second thought.

If that isn't heroism, I don't know what is.

How about the HUSBAND of the happily married woman saving Namor?

"Sorry, Captain, I just wasn't able to grab him in time. Curse, my rubber arms!"

Well, that's just silly - every good comic book writer knows that heat convection isn't a real thing and you're completely safe as long as you don't actually touch the magma.

Every person who wrote anything with Reed in it before Wikipedia should at the very least have to pass an introductory physics course with a B or higher.

Maybe it marks me as old, but this is how I like to see my superheroes- a little angst is cool, but I'd rather see 'em doing valiant, heroic things day to day as opposed to all the grimdark business that seems to be the norm. I grew up with the 1970s Avengers- those're the classics for me.

Aging Gen Xer here. I agree. But I do think the 80's had the perfect balance of grim dark moments with more heroic and family type moments. I think when its all combined successfully you can get the best type of comics. But currently everyone seems like on grim overdrive, with everyone acting like douche nozzles. I just don't find that interesting.

I like Mighty Avengers and Amazing X-Men, though.

The Stern/Buscema run! One of my favorite runs of all time and one of my favorite issues! Lol, the Herc and Namor rivalry - what premadonas, haha.
