Pretty much the entire first page (though even then they skipped some of the awkward complexities of the relationship...like, say, Peter running off with the guy who tried to kill Kitty's primary father figure or his beating her new boyfriend nearly to death).
That's harsh, Uatu. :( I completely disagree with everything Beast has accomploshed lately but rather than speaking to Hank, Uatu decides to show display of behaviour that is typical for a human. The X-writers have been sucking. Marvel's editors have been sucking.
Uatu shows Beast several different realities where the X-Men achieved their dream, and then tells him that they will never happen because of what he did.
hm i admit... it is kinda douchey of Uatu to come in and say "You effed up man, and this is precicely how you effed up"
and then just leaving... it's sorta cruel... but at the same time... Hank messed up bad. i mean his reasons for doing what he did were so selfish and self serving... not sure anyone outside of a supervillain has done so...
Did they ever do an "Extremis drove Tony crazy" retcon for Civil War? Of course, Steve wasn't entirely in-character either, not giving an alternative or anything.
No, they just swept it under the rug. Steve died and it was never properly addressed when he came back, Tony got the mind-wipe during Fraction's run.
Personally, I just look back at Civil War as yet another instance of Mark Millar bashing something he doesn't entirely understand, i.e. American/International politics, and/or tainting a good handful of characters for years to come.
But in MU just stepping into *this* puddle instead of *that* puddle changes the future. So why is Henry such a special case? Did his actions somehow mess up how alternate universes come to be?
Marvel's rules of alternate realities vary depending on the writer. Which is why I prefer the short lived Exile's revival's final big reveal where it was said point blank the rules keep changing every time someone screws with things so get used to them changing.
I preferred the scheme where "real" alternate realities were created by the actions of time travelers like Kang/Immortus interfering with the past, rather than every single event that occurs generating a number of alternate possible outcomes. In that framework, Hank's actions diverging a new original X-Men-less timeline would be a negative result with some meaning.
I think the biggest problem is that Marvel swings back and fourth like a pendulum from every possibility exist to only deliberate actions affect time too much. I mean I know why they do it writers playing around with the multiverse want their stories to have impact but then a few short years later things will just get retconned so plot lines can be revisited.
I mean it is happening right now with What if Age of ultron for all the time is broken stuff from it now we are seeing alternate takes on how it could have turned out. Just like how the whole Wanda didn't just commit near genocide on the mutants in 616 she did it in all alternate realities got walked back to just realities connected to 616 from that point on wards.
I mean when Hickman's attempt at epic story telling ends we will probably get a story that shows all of this incursion nonsense was limited to a small fraction of the multiverse and it didn't really matter but the next big event does.
Indeed. In fact, Hank probably created a whole bunch of timelines where the O5 just up and disappeared one day. I'm actually curious as to how Xavier, Magneto, etc. would react to that.
"I am the Watcher. I do not act. Except for that time. And that one. And that other one. Very rarely, though. Barely half the time, even. AND YOU DISGUST ME."
Uatu not calling him Henry....bit weird but it's not the absolute worst Bendis has written a meant to be pompous character so I can live with it I guess. I would say it's about time that Hank got called out on his time machine shenanigans but much like Wanda in Disassembled I think poor OOC Hank is just the sacrificial lamb to Bendis needing to ruin the X-franchise for a good decade or so
the thing is though... i don't think this is out of character for Hank... Hank has been shown on occassion to revert to emotionally based decisions or know to rationalize his actions.
I think the motivation works, it's just weird to me that he would go to time travel when he's always been way more of a biological smart guy than techological. It would make more sense to me if he cloned the 05 and implanted fake memories in them and would still be something terrible with a lot of shock value etc.....but admittedly I am very anti-Bendis so I might just be looking for things to nitpick now ;p
Re: Brand....I am not sure tbh! Don't think they've broken up on panel but I don't remember the last time I saw them together either!
ah okay. heh i actually kinda like Bendis more times than not.
he's hit and miss though. when he's good, he's really good. but when he's bad, he's bad.
much like Winnick and Johns. Stuff that they have created or characters they love, they write really well. anything else, they sorta play willy nilly with to make thier stories work.
as far as Hank's experties, i think it shows him as an all around genius with a specialization in biology, biomechanics and engeneering, but he has also been shown to be an expert at more technologically based sciences too according to wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beast_(comics)#Genius-level_intellect he also seems to be an expert at quantum mechanics and theoretical physics. so that is why i didn't think "Do you want to build a time Machineeeeee" was out of his perview
I think at the time that Hank did it his mutation was very unstable and he was near death and not thinking clearly. Bobby said something about how if the Scott he grew up with could see Scott now he would be horrified by what he's become, and I think Hank was delirious enough to try it. Possibly he also wanted his younger self to help cure him.
So wait.. did this Kurt and Kitty thing really happen? A lot of this seems like satire poking fun at the...fickle ships in X-Men. Also Uatu...damn. Harsh dude.
Heh. "I'm not Daredevil," shirts. I don't know whether I want to believe that they just become a fashion trend in the future, or whether Kitty is accused of being Daredevil so often that she has a shirt printed up.
