What do you want then? Peter wasn't going be heartless jerk towards her, Peter is going to be selfless, that's just how he is.

He feels bad because of how this affects Anna and yes, he's sad that Otto had to die. Because Peter cares about people, that's who he is. It's not a "caricature", it's how he just is.

And wasn't that why people wanted him back? Because he's a selfless hero instead of a jerk.
