Well, that seems to be official, no matter what art style they use, or who the artist is, that look on older Scott just does NOT work.

It seems like the most successful / enduring superhero outfits are simple and look like they could be real (ie we can get some rough idea of the material, and how it plausibly hangs on the body). Otherwise they just look like complex body-paint

I actually kinda like X-face Cyclops, but I wish the artists would decide whether that's cloth or some kind of visor covering his eyes. Also I'm yet to see an artist make an actually possible outfit for Emma Frost (which actually seems really difficult, is it even possible to have an X-shaped cleavage window that actually stays on your body / provides support? And what am I doing with my life that these are the things I think about?)

Has Sinister run into young Scott and young Jean yet?

Is Sinister currently dead? It's kind of hard to keep track these days.

I think he showed up during Scott's brief stint in jail to taunt him so no there's at least one or two of him still running around.

Unrelated, but I just want to say that one of the things I love about comics is how casually people can say "currently dead."

Unless you're a character whose death is part of an origin story. Those people tend to stay dead.

Though they do come back for What if's, relaunches, alternate universe versions and the occasional Villain impersonation. Even if it is to just die again and ramp up the angst for the hero even more.

So everyone gets in on the are they dead or not fun.

"I ask myself that every day, kid."

The X-writers went overboard with all the "Charles did a bad, bad thing" retcons. A few of them made sense, where we got to see Charles pull himself "back from the brink" and what not. Others, especially the "second team of X-Men that all got killed by Krakoa" did not make sense.

Retconning Xavier into a man with feet of clay isn't anything new or recent. Way back in the Onslaught arc he was revealed to be in love with Jean, his own student and surrogate daughter figure. No, that wasn't just something added to the Ultimate version of Xavier.

Even that was based on earlier stuff a panel from issue 4 back in 1964 has Xavier going on about how special Jean is to him and how he's in love with her.

I do personally think some writers have gone way to far with the Xavier does morally ambiguous things route. Example him keeping Danger imprisoned after he found out she was sapient always seemed out of character to me. I mean the guy's whole reason in life was promoting the peaceful co-operation of different species.

However, some of the other stuff like secret spies, covering up his failures with his powers and other things all fit the character pretty well. This is a guy who once let someone else die under his name.

I've been told that the Danger thing was retconned early in Legacy with it being shown that he couldn't free her without also damaging the circuits that held her personality, or something along those lines

Even if it has been retconned he still kept her existence a secret and didn't seek help from folks like Reed who should have more than been able to come up with a way to safely free her.

Don't think that matters. If she's sentient and self aware, he has no business using her as if she were a toaster level tech just because he can't get her out.

The problem being, of course, that the Danger Room and Mansion in general were trashed and rebuilt so often, when exactly did Danger get included in the tech in the first place?

IIRC She came to be back when they first added the Shiar tech. Since then every time it was trashed she was there in the rebuild. Which is what makes things so bloody creepy she was basically dying and getting brought back to life constantly thanks to the retcon and Xavier never told anyone.

And does make it seem a little weird that computer-jockeys of the level of Kitty and Doug, who spent a lot of time in the Danger Room, never identified her persence.

That too. Either Xavier totally isolated her in such a way that you can't find her unless you deliberately look or he erased the minds of everyone who ever found her to keep a tool for his X-men's convenience.

A second team made sense from a rescue point of view, but the line-up and hiding the existence of the team didn't make sense at all.

I get that they like to make the characters flawed heroes and all, but sometimes they go overboard.

Exactly Storm as the more moderate to Cyclop's more extreme methods would work very well.

Wolverine playing Xavier to Scott's Magneto makes no sense at all.

I think that Storm should have taken the reins from both of them and arranged for half the mutants to return to the School so that all eggs were no longer in one basket. Scott and Logan could have acted as her lieutenants.

I love that Storm is being put back into the spotlight where she belongs. I just think it should have happened a couple years ago.

Yep Storm should have definitely been a more vocal critic of both sides of the schism. That's one reason I am annoyed with the direction. A philosophical divide is one thing forcing the entire cast to choose sides often in complete opposition to their established history is just sloppy writhing.

Date: 2014-05-28 02:28 am (UTC)
From: [personal profile] spacebetween
Yeah Storm should have been a lot more vocal during Schism. If she had the split probably wouldn't have happened with maybe a few members leaving for a time out and clear their heads.

Then again several others should have been vocal as well, instead of them being close to silent on the state of things.

If it helps, Logan's upcoming death is apparently leading her to take over the school, along with getting her own book, so its apparent someone in Marvel realizes how much they ballsed up by making her so underused in Schism.
