Mighty Avengers #10

"In a straight race, Flash would win. His charity would get the money, but it’s a terrible charity that’s actually one of the many scams of old-time Superman foe J. Wilbur Wolfingham. Barry has not researched his charity very thoroughly. He is publicly shamed by this debacle. The Pied Piper tuts at him. Wally would never be so foolish, Barry. Wally was your superior in every conceivable way and anyone under thirty-five knows it, Barry.
"Once he and Monica team up to sort it out, with Monica doing all the heavy lifting because she’s better than him at being a superhero, Barry takes back his winnings and donates them to Monica’s charity." -- Al Ewing, on who would win in a race, the Flash or Monica Rambeau

Date: 2014-06-13 03:21 pm (UTC)(not that the others were bad but the arcs seemed to take a little too long, and i just could NOT get behind the Blade things... and the Land/Landesque art)
can we talk about Luke's AHHH face? :D
and can we maybe MAYBE get Jessica in on this action? i mean she IS a private invesitgator. I am pretty sure she is the best qualified to help amongst these people (i just really REALLY miss Jessica doing stuff apart from being Luke's "family".)

Date: 2014-06-13 03:58 pm (UTC)Seriously, Adam, it can take people years or decades to understand and come to terms with their gender identity. And good on Ulana for not trying to pick one for the kid and make them conform to it.

Date: 2014-06-14 10:00 am (UTC)So for humans it's a perfectly legitmate question to ask about a newborn and parents will, undestandably, go with what the gender appears to be. It may not, ultimately, be correct, and the childs self identity will ultimately take precedence, but it's a start.

Date: 2014-06-13 06:53 pm (UTC)It's like... the Avengers haven't been bad, but the pacing has felt off since the Bendis era began. Either things crawled to a halt, or they were big bam epics that had no emotional depth. Either we were mired in cutesy talking heads, or we were spinning around from having so many set pieces move so quickly.
This book though... it has action, it has pathos, it has emotion. It moves threads forward while keeping things stirring, but it lets things slow down enough for the impact to hit.
I was hesitant when this was announced, because I thought I was done with Luke Cage for a while after the Bendis era. But I was wrong, I really like this book.

Date: 2014-06-13 07:25 pm (UTC)(Of course, they may have evolved so highly that any physical form they take is just a personal expression of style. Though that raises the question why someone who regards funerals as pointless sentiment would choose to include lipstick and jewelry in her physical manifestation... )

Date: 2014-06-16 12:50 pm (UTC)Let me be clear: I would read the HELL out of a Dr. Brashear and Son series right out of the gate. Mighty Avengers has some of the best moments I've read in a Marvel comic in the last year.
I like the characters, I like the stories and I'm OK with Land's art (not a big fan, but it seems much better than the posed stuff I've seen elsewhere). It's things like the character beats that really sell it. The White Tiger's showdown, Adam and Luke's face-to-face, Falcon's power to talk to birds made into a bad-ass ability and more just really make me love this series.
Also, I love the idea that the Blue Marvel is out there fighting super-villains you don't even know about on a regular basis.
