"In a straight race, Flash would win. His charity would get the money, but it’s a terrible charity that’s actually one of the many scams of old-time Superman foe J. Wilbur Wolfingham. Barry has not researched his charity very thoroughly. He is publicly shamed by this debacle. The Pied Piper tuts at him. Wally would never be so foolish, Barry. Wally was your superior in every conceivable way and anyone under thirty-five knows it, Barry.

"Once he and Monica team up to sort it out, with Monica doing all the heavy lifting because she’s better than him at being a superhero, Barry takes back his winnings and donates them to Monica’s charity."
-- Al Ewing, on who would win in a race, the Flash or Monica Rambeau

jesus, this issue seeems MILES above the others...

(not that the others were bad but the arcs seemed to take a little too long, and i just could NOT get behind the Blade things... and the Land/Landesque art)

can we talk about Luke's AHHH face? :D

and can we maybe MAYBE get Jessica in on this action? i mean she IS a private invesitgator. I am pretty sure she is the best qualified to help amongst these people (i just really REALLY miss Jessica doing stuff apart from being Luke's "family".)

"The child must watch itself to learn that."

Seriously, Adam, it can take people years or decades to understand and come to terms with their gender identity. And good on Ulana for not trying to pick one for the kid and make them conform to it.

Well, I'm not sure she could even if she wanted to, given that the baby's just a giant floating head.

The giraffe's Latin name is Giraffa camelopardalis, the species name reflecting that ancient Romans thought it was a hybrid between camels and leopards.

It can, but human babies are not going to be in a position to make gender identity choices for themsleves for some considerable time after birth because they are incapable of doing so through lack of understanding of the concepts.

So for humans it's a perfectly legitmate question to ask about a newborn and parents will, undestandably, go with what the gender appears to be. It may not, ultimately, be correct, and the childs self identity will ultimately take precedence, but it's a start.

Wasn't she was disqualified, along with Quicksilver, since she didn't run fast, she moved fast, but only by flying as EM energy?

Yeah. Although, I don't remember if she was disqualified before or after Barry showed up...

Before I think, IIRC The Runner gave her a distance limit on how far between steps she could go and she kept flying too far.

See, this is the sort of thing that Hickman never seems to get: just stop, for one freakin' issue, telling us how damn important your story is and just revel in the absurdity and beauty and pathos and whimsy of it all. Glowing floating Watcher baby head pays for a number of sins. (Even LAAAAAAAAAAAND's.)

My gosh.. this, this was so much better than anything else I've read of this storyline. It just... the emotions actually connected, it felt resonant, the grief, the joy - wow. I wish comics were like this all the time.

This... this is wonderful

I like this aftermath, not another "Grrr FOR JUSTICE!" moment but something about building the future. That last bit, so sci-fi/fantasy but the most human thing I've seen in an Avenger's book in the last few months.

Lay down revenge and build the future.

I really need to catch up on this book. I don't know what is is about the title "Mighty Avengers" that always makes it the best Avengers book whenever it's published, but damned if it doesn't keep happening.

It's like... the Avengers haven't been bad, but the pacing has felt off since the Bendis era began. Either things crawled to a halt, or they were big bam epics that had no emotional depth. Either we were mired in cutesy talking heads, or we were spinning around from having so many set pieces move so quickly.

This book though... it has action, it has pathos, it has emotion. It moves threads forward while keeping things stirring, but it lets things slow down enough for the impact to hit.

I was hesitant when this was announced, because I thought I was done with Luke Cage for a while after the Bendis era. But I was wrong, I really like this book.

Has there been a previous Watcher identified/depicted as female before? I'd always imagined they wouldn't have gender characteristics, and that group scenes of them in the past might have been mixed company.

(Of course, they may have evolved so highly that any physical form they take is just a personal expression of style. Though that raises the question why someone who regards funerals as pointless sentiment would choose to include lipstick and jewelry in her physical manifestation... )

I'm not recognizing the What If? Avengers group shot there. There's Spider-Man joining the FF in the middle, and Sue dying in childbirth/Reed going insane and hunting down Annhilus in the top right, and Jane Foster becoming Thordis in the bottom right, but what's so special about those Avengers?

Also, now I'm wondering what's become of the 1602 universe, which I think Uatu was keeping to himself or something.

If it is the vanilla Avengers then Iron Man's in the wrong suit (which is certainly a possible artist mistake), unless they've retconned him to never using that really clunky/chunky armour he had at the start. Could be an Avengers where the Hulk never left?

We saw the 1602 verse just recently, as part of the Free Comic Book Day. Peter is performing onstage and Morlun shows up and kills him before vanishing, but there's an implication that all is not quite as it seems.

I think it was more asking what would happen to the 1602 verse now since Uatu was maintaining it. It was his Punishment/Reward for interfering to set things right that time.

Now he's dead so is someone else maintaining it or did it go poof. (Though there should be alternate Uatu's spawned after that with their own 1602's inside them.)

All of the shots on that page are covers from the first volume of What If. The Avengers are the crew from What If... the Avengers Defeated Everybody?, where they're tricked by Immortus into targeting and capturing every other superhuman on the planet.

Scans here got me to pick these up and I haven't been disappointed.

Let me be clear: I would read the HELL out of a Dr. Brashear and Son series right out of the gate. Mighty Avengers has some of the best moments I've read in a Marvel comic in the last year.

I like the characters, I like the stories and I'm OK with Land's art (not a big fan, but it seems much better than the posed stuff I've seen elsewhere). It's things like the character beats that really sell it. The White Tiger's showdown, Adam and Luke's face-to-face, Falcon's power to talk to birds made into a bad-ass ability and more just really make me love this series.

Also, I love the idea that the Blue Marvel is out there fighting super-villains you don't even know about on a regular basis.
