She-Hulk #5- I miss Javier Pulido
Jun. 15th, 2014 07:26 pmWhile Charlie Soule's story for She-Hulk has been interesting, lots of people have been put off by Javier Pulido's rather idiosyncratic art style and his really creepy eyed Jennifer.
Well, with issue #5 and fill in artist Ron Wimberly, I would say all is forgiven Javier.
Back Story: When Jennifer left her previous law firm, the only open case she had was "The Blue Folder" a mysterious legal case she has no memory of. So she's trying to piece together the details from some people who were named in the case.
(I would call this perspective forced at gunpoint)
This of course, is the Shocker, who immediately runs away from her.
Meanwhile Hellcat is meeting with Tigra, who was also named in the suit.

(This has to be the most unsexy image of Tigra ever drawn.)
But the second she names the plaintiff, Greer goes berserk, attacking Patsy. And once she's down, she attempts to throw herself off the building.

(And apparently she dug into her secret stash of Pym Particles)
While the story does have my attention, I would look forward to the return of Javier Pulido; creepy Jennifer Eyes and all.

Date: 2014-06-16 01:49 am (UTC)Reminds me of the flack that Eric Canete got during his issue of Amazing Spider-man. Both worked in animation (Canete on JLU and Wimberly on Black Dynamite), both getting flack for weird perspective and unsexy women...
I generally like his art (own his vertigo comic "Prince of Cats).

Date: 2014-06-16 04:42 pm (UTC)Part of me is going really? The guy who was hired to do the Black Dynamite character designs? Really? The guy who was commissioned by the Criterion Collection to illustrate one of their movies? The guy who did that cool Blaxploitation variant cover for Mighty Avengers?
And the draftmanship for most of these pages is pretty solid. All the weird perspectives are clearly a stylistic choice rather then being from lack of skill (Note: That doesn't invalidate your dislike of it. A stylistic choice can still suck).
I like his linework and coloring style. Although from these pages yes, he doesn't draw pretty people. Maybe I'm so used to his style that it isn't crazy jarring to me...

Date: 2014-06-16 02:10 am (UTC)This reminds me of those Aeon Flux cartoons I used to watch on MTV back in the 90s.

Date: 2014-06-16 03:51 am (UTC)I do like how he plays with different "lens" , creating different visual distortions; i.e. the fish eye lens on the first page.

Date: 2014-06-16 03:53 am (UTC)I do think the way he drew Tigra is a bit weird, but his She-Hulk and Hellcat both looked great to me, and I really love the way he did the acrobatics and fighting between Tigra and Hellcat.

Date: 2014-06-16 06:06 am (UTC)That is a gorgeous, striking, beautiful splash page. I really like the crazy wide angle shots overall.
And the low value contrast in the coloring is unusual, but as I sit in a humid room on a summer night, it feels sticky and summery and sexy and right to me.. It's sort of crepuscular, with a dusky sky and lighting from the side.
I probably wouldn't be that nuts about this art in black and white, but colored, I think it's kind of sexy.
