Some fans say Jet Zola is still in her teens, but I'm not seeing it. That 23rd Birthday line should clear everything up.

The confusion seems to be that she was in her early teens when Cap arrived in Dimension Z, and then a *decade passed* in Dimension Z.

God, the online reaction to this has been one of the ugliest things I've ever seen out of the putrid maw that is the dark side of fandom. I love how the dialogue even explicitly says she's 23 and people are still calling the Falcon a statutory rapist. You have to wonder if the response would be nearly as bad if he were white.

Well, if you take that statement as evidence by itself, it means that she is at least 23. She could still be 23, or she could be older, but she definitely isn't under 23, which means it still isn't statutory rape by any definition.

Honestly, I'm not even entirely sure how people came to that conclusion at all. I admit, until just now I didn't even know Zola even HAD a daughter, but the thought that she was underage never even crossed my mind while I read this. Is there some prior context I'm missing that people are picking up on, or is the Internet just being colossally stupid again?

She aged in an "alien dimension", in which time moved much faster than in the real world, but she is nonetheless >23 by any stretch of the imagination. Nonetheless, this is where people get their bogus argument from. Though really, most of them know nothing about the character or series and just like to hate.

I actually don't think Falcon's race has much to do with the issue here. The big post that sparked this whole thing off goes "Because of that shitstain, and his worthless blight on the face of Cap’s history of a run, Sam Wilson — one of the kindest, most loyal, moral, and good characters in 616 — is now a rapist." And it goes on to talk about how terrible it is for Sam to be portrayed this way. Meanwhile it doesn't talk about how awful it is Jet Zola got raped - it doesn't even mention her name.

It's this bizarre scenario where tumblr is actually more offended on behalf of the supposed rapist than they are for the supposed rape victim. I guess because no one really gives a shit about Jet Zola.

Well, honestly, looking at that first page in a vacuum, my first thought was that Falcon was the one getting raped here. She got him black out drunk and then had her way with him.

Yeah, inasmuch as neither putative rapist nor putative victim are real people, I don't think it's that bizarre. I mean, if you wrote a story about Superman eating somebody's face, most critics would lead with "That's a stupid thing to have Superman do," not "That poor guy's poor face!"

If it's the quality of future stories that matters, Falcon probably is more "important" than Jet, if only because he'll be in more of them.

Slightly more seriously, I don't quite "get" people saying Kirsten Stewart is cinema's greatest monster (next to Michael Bay).

I really like her a lot but it took some time. I guess I "get" it because I used to not like her much because of her affiliation with Twilight and was very amused by the gifs and funny stuff on the Internet about her facial expressions, but then I realised that it's the story I disliked and not her and wasn't really being fair. She has an introvert charm about her, that many people can't appreciate, which is no different than how introverts get treated in real life.

True acceptance and true tolerance of each other are lies, yo. Nepotism and slight tolerance is where it's at.

I expected more teeth gnashing. sometimes I forget scans_daily can actually be really reasonable.

Pretty much every negative response to this and the cries of statutory rape were based on people seeing this without context and not following the series prior, right? That extremely well written tumblr post clearing it all up was brilliant.

I believe (and I've stayed right out of this as I don't follow the Cap title) that further fuel was thrown on the fire when the creators waded in and a couple of them were apparently less than tactful in their replies to those who were upset.

Honestly, though, I get the professionalism of being tact dealing with fans if they are unhappy with your work, but I don't think there needs to be any courtesy given to people who are calling you names and spreading slander against you.

I am not interested in this Sam Wilson becoming Cap or Wolvie dying. In less than a year status quo will be resolved just in time for the next batch of movies.

To be fair, I don't think Hickman's used he sincer Infinity ended, so it's not like the character's appearing & receiving no development, and I know he did dn issue which went into her backstory, but I don't remember what it was. Just pies.

Yep. As I thought. She doesn't care about the facts or anything, she just wanted to incite a/continue her vendetta against Remender. (I'm not commenting on the quality of his work or any problems that may or may not be associated with it here.)
