IDW's Star Trek title has been hit and miss with storylines so far, but they're setting up something pretty cool starting with this month's issue. It was only a matter of time before they bring 'Q' to the center stage.

Picard is mourning Spock, when Q appears and informs him of Spock's situation (Alive in the past of an alternate universe.), he then reveals a few details on the differences of the parallel timelines, then foreshadows the events caused by Spock's crossover will put the new timeline in jeopardy of a certain doom. Picard pleads with Q not to interfere, BUT we all know, Q can't resist toying with a new Starfleet captain.

Three pages after the cut

Q makes the Enterpise crew relive the "No Win Scenario" Kobayashi Maru which results in the destruction of the ship, he then introduces himself to Kirk, the two debate over the reality of such a situation, then Q points out how Kirk cheated death in "Into Darkness" and takes him back to that moment.

SO, where did Q take the crew to?, Borg Space?, Mirror Universe?, 1984 to save some Humpback Whales?!?!? NO!!!

Cue the Deep Space Nine Theme Trumpets!!!!!

A DS9 under Dominion occupation during the namesake war. Uh oh.

Happened in the original continuity as well. The real issue is whether or not they have control over the wormhole.

As much as I adore Q, I must confess I am wary of this. :T

Wasn't the point of the new movie universe to reset and simplify Trek continuity? Between Into Darkness and this they've been less committed to the reboot than DC.

I'm not sure you're aware of this, but bringing in classic continuity into JJ's take of Star Trek has been there since before the first movie was released. A lot of these comics deal with classic Trek continuity issues that are almost never handled properly in the movies. The KHAN comics for example explains why Khan looks like a white englishman instead of a hispanic/indian. Heck, they even bring up the fact that Khan was not a murdering, ruthless ruler, where as the movie would tell you that he's all about mass genocide.

The comics are essentially trying to fix what JJ, Alex, Roberto and Damon keep screwing up.

It's nice reading the Star Trek reboot done by people who 'get it', as opposed to the ones that actually made the movies. I've only read a few issues of the run, but I have to agree with you.

Transformers fans who are "Bayed out" are finding similar solace in the IDW Transformers titles.

It's not how it is being handled but that it is even being handled at all. What is the point of rebooting a franchise if the old continuity is going to continue to shape it?

Because they want that brand familiarity. This is why it's the original crew instead of an entirely new crew. That's why it retreads a lot of what's come before it instead of doing something that is truly different. As long as this new Star Trek series focuses on Kirk and company, they will always look back and pull things that we have all grown accustomed to because in their mind, that is what makes it 'Star Trek'.

And again, it's all a very poor interpretation of the original continuity anyways. One of my favorite face palming moments during the promotion of the film came in the form of Damon Lindelof where he spoke very adamantly about how Earth was going to have a larger role in their movies. Question. During the entire three season run of the original series, how many times did the Enterprise visit their present day Earth?

These comics aren't going to direct the direction of the movies. These are a thing for general ST fans while the movie stuff, as usual, is going to go where it wants to go.

Do they explain why Khan was so poorly acted, too?

Peas and rice, that art is awful. I can't make up my mind if it looks more like tracing or just slapping a filter over publicity shots.

So, um, did anyone else notice that the art basically looks like an episode of Archer? Because I did, and now Uhura sounds like Lana Kane.

hmmm i have to admit... this is something Q would do. He's the traditional trickster in space. He brings chaos when there is order, order when there is chaos, and knocks down the hero a peg or two when he suffers from Hubris. When Picard boasted that Humanity is "ready for anything" out there in space, he shoves them foward to meet the Borg (i can go into an analysis why this act is the many fold act of a traditional trickster, but another time) after which Picard admits that he was wrong and Q whooses them back.

here we have Kirk boasting that there is no such thing as a No-Win Scenario and that the proof of that is that he has cheated death. Now, i like that Kirk believes that there is a no such thing... but at the same time, i love that Q is there to teach him a lesson, and help him grow. In my head, if this is done right, Kirk will learn that even if there is no way to win, life is so precious and fragile that he will continue to fight even if it means his death.

It's strange. I like the idea that he does not accept a no win situation, but at the same time, it could cause him to lose sight of how precious life is.

Some fans think Q "introduced" Picard to the Borg since the Borg were on their way anyhow. The final first season episode of TNG "The Neutral Zone" implied as much. Q wanted Picard and Co. to know the Borg was coming.
