I posted a few panels from Ms Marvel #6 for the Wolverine intro, and that leaves me with just enough "space" to post a little more.

Kamala's father has been concerned about her recent behaviour, her sneaking out, her secretiveness etc, and has asked Sheikh Abdullah down at the local mosque to have a little chart with her. We've briefly met Sheikh Abdullah before and know that he views Kamala as one of those challenging students that all teachers have to deal with from time to time.

Kamala is convinced he hates her, and so is not looking forward to the "little chat", but Aamir asks her to...

"... the master will appear"

I love that (Like most of the priests and ministers I've known in real life) he is shown as being worldly-wise enough to appreciate that there are some things that can't and/or won't change, at best you can guide them, and pray it all works out.

and we also meet her first proper supervillain, the guy who is behind a series of attacks by cybernetic alligators... Whilst tracking them down a sewer, Kamala finds a sort of lair...

Her first nemesis is a cockatiel hybrid clone of Thomas Edison.... of COURSE it is.... (Hey, at least it's not another ruddy Tesla reference!)

I LOVE comics!

I think Kamala needs more of Marvel's z-grade baddies to fill up her rogue's gallery. Like the Headmen, the Ringer, or the Kangaroo.

God, the Headmen. Yes. (Which leads me to the realization that the She-Hulk might be a fabulous mentor for Kamala.)

Anybody get the feeling this comic is trying WAY too hard to appeal to the internet crowd?

First Kamala is geeking out to Wolverine and telling him she wrote fan-fiction about him, to her first antagonist being Thomas Edison, who the Internet has dubbed to be worse than Hitler.

No one seemed to mind when Young Avengers did it recently.

I think they are trying more for an all ages appeal. The book reminds me a lot of what they did with their Marvel Adventures line.

I don't mind them trying to appeal to different people but I find the memes odd. Maybe it's just me but what happens on the internet tends to stay there for me. Saying this kind of stuff outloud seems weird a foreign.

To be fair, although he obviously wasn't as bad as Hitler, Edison was a pretty legit awful person.

Edison laughed his way to the bank.

I understand that people are tired of the Edison = figurative Hitler. But on the other hand, Edison is going to forever be known as the father of electricity. when Tesla did more.

Well not a lot of comics are doing that apart from this and YA so it's no biggie if one or two comics, especially ones about teens, appeal to the teen crowd, which just so happens to be active on the internet.

Heck, I could argue that we NEED at least one or two to appeal to the internet crowd, when the rest do as they do and appeal to classic comic fans.

The Thomas Edison thing's a bit on the nose- it seemed better when it was just " oh, antagonistic Inventor surnamed Edison, that's kind of clever ".

But hey, good to know he's not some poor Terrigen'd bastard who drew the short straw.

It suddenly occurs to me that there's probably at least a few dozen Edison and Tesla clones wandering around the Marvel universe, and most of them are probably making trouble.

Quantum and Woody also had a go at Edison as evil jerkbag. Heh.

There are worse things than to appeal to the Internet crowd if it sells enough comics to grow a fanbase.

And that first scene is so lovely... if I didn't already love this comic, that would have sealed the deal. It's so nice to see common sense, and respect in such a situation. Very well handled.

And while I may gripe about some of the elements of the comic, that has to be the most REASONABLE depiction of a religious authority figure I have ever seen in a comic.

All of the Muslim characters are being fleshed out really well. I loved the bit with Kamala's big brother when she came home after the mist.

It's particularly important in his case

agreed. Yeah there are a lot of bad preachers out there... but there are A LOT of good ones out there too that are a lot more in keeping with my image of Christ and other Religious founders.

Clearly the Edison/Cockatiel hybrid can only be stopped by a clone of Nicola Tesla with budgerigar DNA.
