After the events of 'Original Sin', Peter witnesses a secret -- another person was bitten by the spider that bit him. (Kudos to Slott for not making it Uncle Ben beating up Aunt May)

Peter goes to where she's being kept.

Peter lets her out and tells her that Morlun is dead. Cindy is happy to finally be free (she covers herself with a costume made of her webbing and calls herself Silk) and goes to see her family, only to discover that they're missing. Peter vows to help her find them, and she gets around to asking how Morlun died. Peter tells her it happened twice.

I wouldn't go that far. The story did its best to ruin the character of Gwen Stacy, a well loved character. The only established character this may put a blemish on is Ezekiel, but really, who gives a monkeys about Ezekiel?

*sighs* Original Sin is really becoming something of a let down with many of these revelations. At this point, I almost don't even care who killed the Watcher anymore since no one else at Marvel seems to. It's not about the initial murder mystery anymore, it's about an event that happens mid-story that effects other books. It's Identity Crisis all over again.

Yes, that's the whole point. The story of the murder mystery is what the Original Sins mini-series is all about. For all the tie-ins, they're intentionally just using the "secrets revealed" plot device as a springboard to tell their owns separate stories. That way, the mini-series works as a completely self-contained story that doesn't require reading any tie-ins, and people who don't want to read the mini-series won't be lost when they pick up the latest issue of Daredevil or Amazing Spider-Man or whatever.

Isn't that how an event should be handled? As an opportunity for each writer to tell their own story, not as an "opportunity" to be a cog in another writer's story.

Writing!

Am I the only one who thinks that bringing back the Spider-Totem stuff is absolutely baffling? It was a dumb idea the first time, and I don't think anyone was clamoring to have it dredged up. Not to mention, having Morlun hop from universe to universe killing dudes is still just a variation on "the villain kills a bunch of dudes. So many dudes" method of establishing a villain as a threat, AKA the laziest possible way of building up a villain.

At this point every time I see something from Slott's Spider-Man I just find myself thinking that it's gonna need a hell of a reboot once he leaves to get me to care at all about the character.

And Original Sins continues to be incredibly disappointing. The premise had me worried, but I liked the idea of the format, giving each book only the vaguest tie-in, for use a springboard for their own stories. Sadly though all the reveals that we've seen so far have left a whole lot to be desired.

So they've had powers the same length of time, but she's better with her abilities, and knows more about what's going on.

Wouldn't it be nice if Peter was actually respected for having more experience in the long run, instead of screwing up yet again? Sigh. He couldn't take a minute longer to listen to the message, just in case the information was relevant.

And how does Silk basically go from wearing shorts and a tanktop to covering her clothes and other parts of her with her webbing to create a costume that makes her look almost naked? Seriously, we get one rear view that makes it clear nothing comes between her and her webbing...The shorts, where did they go?

I figure the kiss was the result of spider-pheromones between the two.

On the positive side, I like that she's a character of color, of Asian descent. That's nice. Maybe she'll prove to be interesting, useful, and a valuable addition to the mythos.

And maybe she'll be eaten by the time the Spiderverse is over.

She's not actually *better* with her powers, but she's faster than him and can shoot her own webbing.

When they're scuffling earlier it's established that Peter's stronger, so they've got their peaks in different areas.

And yeah the makeout is cleary a "supernatural instincts overriding our mortal minds" thing.

And Morlun ages up to adulthood superfast, kills them, conquers the world, and Mephisto laughs and laughs, this is what you get for listening to me and also for letting JMS ever write your book, Peter.

JMS was a far better writer than this with really only two duds to his name in Sins Past and OMD. Both of which were editorially mandated in some way either to change a pivotal plot element (Sins Past had Peter switched out as the father of the children in favour of Norman fucking Osborn) or quite blatantly as a whole (OMD). The Spider-Totem stuff was a vaguely interesting idea that could have easily been wiped aside by the next writer, unlike this.

Honest Question:

Aside from Ms. Marvel Does the majority of SD like ANY mainstreak comics? I've been away for a while, but damn I don't think I've seen a positive comments in any DC/Marvel thread that isn't about that comic and even that one gets trashed for being 'tumblr bait'

I'm just sort of depressed these days. Where is the joy of comics? Where is the wonder at "OH WOW, WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN NEXT!?" it seems like it's just a scramble to who can lay the biggest burn on the comic now.

Eh, it's just easy to complain.

I like She-Hulk, I enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy at the moment, and I like Captain Marvel all right. I'm sort of enjoying some of the current X-Men stuff even if I wish they'd either send the time-displaced kids home already or at least stop filling pages of multiple books with them.

Soule's Swamp Thing is actually kind of cool, or at least the artist is good. It's weird that they started with saying it wasn't the Alan Moore version of Alec, but then they gave him all those powers anyway. But I don't really blame Soule for that.

And this is a Spider-Man post. Being an older Spider-Man fan is like getting spat on in general whenever a book comes out. He was a lot of kids' favorite super-hero, and he's been jerked around pretty hard for a long time.

Slott really is just marathoning Doctor Who DVDs to cherry-pick lines and story elements he can awkwardly insert into his work, isn't he? I mean, that's far easier than ever writing a compelling storyline...

Like the Cap films that came out prior to the Marvel Studios effort are actively canon in the MU and everyone's been hiding them from Steve; Cue 22 pages of him sitting there scoffing at his stealing cars, Red Skull being Italian, diverting a rocket he's strapped to by wiggling his body, and so on.

You know what... I think I like this.An 'event' that has its own central storyline, and just gives a springboard narrative to other stories going on. I can get behind this.

The story itself seems interesting. Always happy to see more female or POC heroes. Bonus points in this case for not having a name that's a /direct/ analog to an existing male. ("Silk" is a bit on the nose, but I'll take it.) It's also interesting to see a non-mutant non-Hulk struggling with their powers as part of their backstory.

And 'Identity Crisis" is an unfortunate comparison to make, considering that Spidey actually had his /own/ Identity Crisis storyline (FOUR new secret identities!) which was a delightful tale.

And considering that this is both a tie-in issue AND a Dan Slott-written Spider-Man, that is a shock. Here's hoping Slott doesn't mess this up too.
