Yeah, MGK made me actually care about Doctor Strange while simultaneously ruining him for me, because no other writer ever seems to measure up to the promise of what MGK laid out.

I thought Brian K. Vaughn's "Doctor Strange: The Oath" was pretty damn good, but the odds of him returning to the big two can't be great.

Don't forget the recent one-shot by Gillen that was posted here a week or two ago. That one was pretty awesome as well.

"Blood magic is forbidden! We know this from the holy works of Warcraft and Dragon Age!"

Sometimes hooking monks up to the internet has unexpected consequences.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH it would be hilarious of techno monks actually DID see some of thespells in video games and RPGs and adapted them, or realized they could be used as real spells

Years ago I came up with a character who had developing magical powers and in the absence of a convenient mentor taught themselves to use magic by reference to RPG's and gradually levelled up.

"You've STOLEN their peace, Stephen, and what of me? I'm the one who had him moved to hospice... would you dismiss my diagnosis? Discredit my professional opinion?"

No one talks like this.

Seriously! If the patient is under another doctor's care (with their consent, which was obtained) then that's how it is. Also, that's a pretty healthy looking and chatty guy for someone with a brainstem tumour. Probably a good idea to at least question her diagnosis!

It's annoying, because the rest of the stuff she's saying is important and relevant to the students.

To promise you can save someone with an experimental surgery is a bit much.

I was assuming that's how it sounds through Strange's memory filter.

On the Dr Strange Nostalgia Channel, things do get an uptick of drama.

'I had some orange juice and toast with butter for breakfast.'

"AT DAYBREAK, TO SATISFY THE NEEDS OF MY BODY, I IMBIBED OF PRISTINE JUICE, DEVOID OF PULP, AND CONSUMED CAREFULLY SLICED BREAD, DELICATELY EMBRACED WITH CREAM."

Admit it, it would make a lot of sense in explaining his speech patterns, besides the usual one of being written by Stan Lee.

Probably not. Strange was using science, and what good has that ever done for anyone?

That's twice now that Hickman's had Doctor Strange dramatically say "I am... The Doctor" and it still sounds weird to me. I get that this story was flashing back to his past, but "your" doctor or "a" doctor would sound much more natural. Doctor Strange is not Doctor Who, and he's just "A" doctor, not the definitive article.

And being a doctor is really the absolute least impressive thing that Doctor Strange could say about himself, I don't know if he's Sorcerer Supreme at this point, but surely he could come up with something better to say about himself.

My bad, it hasn't been tagged for creator and I just assumed. Should have known though, the annuals are rarely written by the normal writers.

My point besides that stands though.

Yeah, I tend to agree with you, and if you think this makes Dr. Strange look dark, just wait until you see what's going on in the main title under Hickman's watch. Ho boy.

hmmmm this actually seems interesting and in character... though honestly, i don't see why the monks are so appauled. he saved the girl;s life sacrificing his own... he seems like he should be able to deal with the demon better than that girl...

Pssh. Taking ONE demon into his body is child's play for a Sorcerer Supreme. If becoming the reincarnation of SHUMA-GORATH at one point didn't turn Strange evil, this won't.

I like it better when Dr. Strange has a sense of humor. Not Spider-Man's level of wisecracks, but something close.

That's REALLY shitty advice you're offering to the interns there Stephen, no doctor NEVER loses a patient, despite their best efforts, so it's best to learn to cope with it as soon as you can.

Wait, blood magic is inherently evil by default? Well, that sucks for the Runaways' Nico Minoru then, because that's the only kind she can do!

Somehow I don't see sacrificing one's own spiritual wellbeing to save an innocent as an inherently evil act of magic. It could be worrying that the Sorcerer Supreme has taken an evil supernatural creature into himself, but then again who would be better positioned to manage such a feat safely?

And the monks are completely surprised that Strange saved the person they called on him to save? What did they think they were doing if the attempt was doomed to failure?

How many times is this that Strange has taken a world-shattering demon into himself? Third? Fourth?

And this demon said it couldn't be exorcised... yet it left on its own. So why couldn't Strange blast/trap/contain it (in something else) during the short span between it leaving the girl and entering him? Yeah, that'd mean going back on his word to let it possess him, but so what?

Date: 2014-07-30 09:46 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] drtechnobabel
Good question. You'd think that given the amount of times he's done this, Strange would have some other plan for how to deal with this sort of scenario by now. Maybe he just gets off on it.
