Jean Grey: A Return to Form?

So, not-that-recentishly ago teen!Jean Grey picked up a shiny new power.




The thing is, there was something about this that struck me as kinda...familiar.







Energy forms aren't exactly new for Jean. I think she used them during the Neal Adams' run too and in the bits of Uncanny that lead up to the whole Phoenix thing.




I’m still not entirely sure how teen!Jean’s energy form is supposed to be a new power. I’m really not trying to be a jerk or anything, I’m legitimately curious as to how it’s different from stuff we’ve seen her do before. Is she intangible when she uses it? Does it change how her TK functions? Is she physically stronger in her energy form? I think it would be interesting to have her powers branch out in a whole new direction.

I know everyone likes to rag on bendis for ignoring continuity, but this seems nitpicky. If it's not common knowledge that something is part of her powerset, I don't think you can blame him.

O, gosh, yes, and Marvel's humans are so flawed. So flawed in continuity throughout so many of their books.

Eh I'm a "continuity should be applied in broad strokes" type of guy, so this sort of thing doesn't really bother me.

This post was based on actual curiosity about Jean's new power. You sorta have to take continuity in broad strokes.

I'm under the impression that in her new form she can absorb the psychic energy from the people around her using her telepathy and convert it to telekinetic energy, stronger telekinetic blasts than she's normally capable of.

Is it actually elaborated on as to what her new power IS? A lot of artists used the shimmery power effect on Jean in the past because her psi powers were effectively invisible (Her Phoenix powers were another matter) and they wanted something to do. IIRC in at least one story there's a mention that her powers sometimes cause some local isonisation.

Yeah, Jean, Rachel and Xavier were telepathing in an Excalibur issue and Alistaire was waving his hand in the pretty lights. Captain Britain, of course, sternly told him to stop mucking about as if he'd "never seen psionically induced atmospheric ionisation before." Meggan then deflated Brian as per usual.

Is it all really new?

I'm not sure how new it is at all. The Phoenix Force itself is the sum total of psionic energy in the universe that wielders such as Jean can use as a power source to manipulate the reality around them.

This just seems like a scaled down version of it, and is perhaps why Jean is the most appropriate wielder of the Force.

Moreover, some of the dramatic, power feats Jean has used as Phoenix have been done using the life-force/"love"/"fellowship" of her comrades. Shes like the care bear stare of the X-men.
