Axis event. Something about morality switch. Or something. I honestly can't keep up with Marvel events at all, but damn if I don't love me some Hobgoblin.
Due to the AXIS "shift" Kingsley is now an enterprising superhero leasing out superhero identities to those who who have the funds. Basically the Hobgoblin has become NEMESIS done for the good guys and less Mark Millar extreme. He's even published a self-help book too, hence what the lil Goblin is reading in the preview.
This is quite possibly the greatest last minute switch ever as Norman Osborn was supposed to be in this event, but due to Goblin Nation was removed from the equation. Enter the replacement, Hobgoblin and I think the event carries on even better with Kingsley more in the role than Norman as the "hero".
For some reason I'm getting a "Saul Goodman" feel all over this and I love it.
What do you find pretentious about it? The homage panels are a bit much, but other than that this looks like a pretty typical unlettered preview to me.
As context for those unaware, the upcoming Marvel Axis event will see Red Skull get a power boost to become "Red Onslaught" and pull a morality switch on a bunch of heroes and villains.
Deadpool is going monk, Carnage will act as an anti-hero, Hobgoblin seems to be going full superhero, and Tony Stark is getting turned into more of a dick, to name a few examples. There'll also be a mini called Axis: Revolutions that sees stuff like Kitty Pryde robbinga bank.
I don't think the idea is being applied consistently, because you're right, that definitely isn't a straight morality switch. My guess is that someone wanted to write Tony Stark as more of an asshole than usual while preserving an easy out for when they were finished, and Remender's Axis event just happened to be a convenient place to launch it from.
They're also implying that it's linked to something we haven't seen from the Civil War days for Tony, a bit of a secret that the Red Skull is going to dredge up.
Because, you know, what the fans were demanding was more bullshit from that period and not, say, the flawed man trying to do right and occasionally slipping up, which I haven't seen since the end of Fraction's run.
