Iron Marshal #1
Oct. 22nd, 2014 10:13 pmHi folks!
You may have noticed in the occasional requests threads that I have been making requests for scans of Jademan Comics. I finally found one of my own issues.

For those of you are younger, or missed them when they were around, Jademan Comics were an attempt by entrepreneur Tony Wong to bring his successful Hong Kong comics to an English-speaking audience. They had a decent spread of genres, but he decided the market was best for kung fu comics.
These tended to be long-running soap operas filled with dozens of characters, who solved all their problems with martial arts. (Martial arts was also often the cause of all their problems.) Jademan was an early adopter of computer coloring, so often had some interesting effects.
Unfortunately, Mr. Wong got caught doing something illegal with money (the details are lost to my memory), went to jail, and the company's overseas ventures collapsed.
Eleven pages of thirty-three--I'm unsure of the copyright status of Jademan in the U.S., but some of the licenses were picked up by other Hong Kong comics companies.

This gentleman is rhe Bloody Duke, who is attacking the imperial palace for reasons that are not explained in this issue. He easily scatters the soldiers, and is boasting/complaining about how easy it was, when he senses a fancy robe behind him and has his forearm seized.
We then learn that this was a flashback. In the present day, Bloody Duke is in shackles in a filthy cell. A rat tries to eat some of his food, and Bloody Duke explodes its head with his spit.

A snake has found the eagle's nest and is after its eggs. From the prison gate, Strongman watches. The eagle is able to defend its nest from the snake, but only at the cost of its own life. Bloody Duke comments on the fight from his cell, which is not in line of sight from the gate--and no one had mentioned what was going on.
Strongman gloats that Bloody Duke will be dead by the time the Emperor arrives. Bloody Duke then flashes back to the earlier battle. After having his arm seized, Bloody Duke thrust his internal power against that of the Emperor. The ruler (according to Bloody Duke's memory) was taken aback, and his attempts to fight back were feeble, until a little person used a blowpipe to launch exploding nerve gas. Bloody Duke considers this a cowardly ttick.
At the gate of the ten-mile wall around the prison, the guards are surprised to see an elderly woodcutter emerge from the forest. They warn him off. When the boss guard comes out, the woodcutter claims he has heard the emperor is coming this way and wants to see him. The boss guard snottily informs the old man that he is not important enough to even glimpse the emperor.

The boss guard uses one of his underlings as a human shield against the arrows. As the guards fall, a catapult hidden in the forest launches a man most of the way up the wall, his lightfoot allowing him to run the rest of the way up.

The boss guard wants to try two out of three, but Herlin Sabre punches him in the face so hard the hapless guard flies all the way to the forest. Herlin Sabre then signals the rest of his crew to advance.

Looks more like an exotic bluebird to me, and this "pigeon" has its feathers coated with a flesh-melting poison so that anyone trying to intercept the message will die. The invaders continue further into the prison.
As the messenger bird flies, its beautiful plumage attracts attention from farmers in their fields, and boys roughousing. The boys chase after the bird, seeing it slowing down. .

Yes, that's our hero, the Iron Marshal.
Back at the prison, Strongman and his underlings prepare for battle, but the invaders have incendiary bombs to rain down on the defenders. The final caption asks why the prison is being attacked, but we may never know.
