The cover seems to be about the Star Sapphire's thigh gap. It's very stark both in her actual figure and in her shadow.
1. There really shouldn't be one in her shadow if the light is coming in at a 45* angle rather than straight on. At some angle, the rays would intersect her leg. She's not a flat panel monitor with a 178* viewing angle.
2. If she's sufficiently starkly backlit that there's a bright white thigh gap, there should be a second shadow falling away in front of her. I understand I probably shouldn't be questioning the light physics of people floating in a white fog, though.
I put 20 bucks on the theory that they simply filled in the outlines with the appropriate colours, tilted, skewed and translated the images, and called it a day.
They didn't even have the shadows merge or go in opposite directions, which would have REALLY sold either the 'distant regret' or 'severing of ties' mood they're aiming for.
I think the reason it's so prominent is that without it, it'd be really hard to see where her legs split above the knees, due to the, er... 'crotch area' of her costume being all black. The completely white background just makes it stick out even more.
Given that the various Corps members sort of glow with their own light, not sure that shadows they cast (even weird coloured ones) have any bearing on how they seem to be illuminated
If i might ask what happens in this issue that justifies the cover, because I thought Carol and Hal broke up the second Geoff Johns left the book and she joined New Guardians.
*Spoilers for GodHead in this reply. If you've not finished that run and don't want to know, then close now.*
At the end of the Godhead story line, Hal learns that not only is Kyle alive, but that in his travels he's been accompanied by Carol and that she and Kyle have grown quite close. Kissing close. She likes him as he's a lot more together than Hal is. Hal tells Kyle he's OK with it, but in this issue above admits to Carol while having a day off on Earth that he'd lied about being ok with it and secretly he'd hoped that one day they'd work it out again. They talk, have a rather grown up and mature moment, (especially for Hal) and agree that things are ok for now, and maybe, one day, they could see it working again for them is circumstances are right. It's a bit bittersweet, but not as harsh as that cover makes out.
