Would you believe tax avoidance?

Yes to avoid a gift tax situation the LSH is force to cut one member. God I miss the 70s.

TAXES!

... also, couldn't they simply pay them? Like, I think some of the members had money, and Superboy could pretty much turn a small moon into a diamond with his powers if he wanted to...

RJ Brande, who funded the Legion back then, was the richest man in the UP due to his business being stellar engineering, so the taxes he would have to pay would be... remarkable

I dare say that in this time epoch diamonds are about as valuable as they are in the world of the Freefall webcomic: Not at all. The galactic authorities are likely wise to Superboy's schemes, too.

Besides, they can't pay taxes! They're teenagers, where's the sticking-it-to-the-Manness in paying the Man's taxes? That's a ticket to Squaresville if I ever saw one!

Mind you, comic/SF writers rarely seem to peg on the fact that the value of minerals changes a lot when you have a ton of planets to look for them on.

Still, I'm sure they could do *something* to raise money.

Speaking of which, didn't they have a super rich backer at this point...? Or did that come a bit later?

Threeboot is the real 'stick it to the man' group (though in their case, they'd simply ask Projecta for funs)

Or you have an Element Lad to make them at will.

I believe the threeboot version's transmutations reversed themselves after a time limit, but didn't the reboot version make R.J. Brande rich by providing the vital element for his stargates?

Well, if there's still money there's something that's valuable as a means of exchange, and I would imagine between Element Lad, Brianiac 5, and the White Witch they'd be able to cover any debts.

"So for tax purposes we're splitting the legion into 'the legion of super heroes' and 'the super hero legion'. The two teams will be separate, but obviously will work together when necessary which will be always, and will have an equipment/building-sharing system which will work out with a net monetary exchange of zero."
