The Ozymandias thing doesn't work if the guy is smugging it up the whole time like he's an obviously evil supervillain motherfucker.

What do you think Ozymandius was doing between the few scenes we saw him in pre-revelation Watchmen? Always seems like a smug git to me, so a little smugging (good word by the way, I like it) seems likely.

Sadly agreed, it ruins it to have that side if him blatantly obvious in the art. If he looked disinterested or contemplative the effect of him referring to himself in such grandiose terms would almost reach sympathetic levels. Rather than ego it'd look like that came from somewhere rational and introspective, even gently self-deprecating. But as-is he's so obviously a bad guy it's just what you called it, 'smugging' for the reader.
