[personal profile] ozaline posting in [community profile] scans_daily

I actually posted this last month as part of my Favourite Creator post on Larry Hama, but since that post was super long and there was a lot going on, and lastly cause we seem to be reflecting on Star Wars comic history, I thought I'd repost the story of the Third Law.

This was one of the stories from Marvel that got ascended to a slightly higher level of canon, with additional fleshing out by Wizards of the Coast, and I think it's a goody.

Each of Vader's assassins try and fail to take out the Viscount, and Leia manages to dispatch all of them without using any illegal weapons. there's also a bit that mentions you can get gravity field distorters at any space duty-free.... love it!

Vader gives them one last chance to back off, and then kills the Viscount.

Leia reveals that the loan has already gone through, that using the crown jewels of Alderaan as collateral, in place of stocks and bonds, they secured the loan almost immediately on arriving and the rest of the trip was spent waiting for Vader to kill the Viscount-droid to cover up the evidence of their trickery.

As a bonus here's the first page of Larry Hama's break-down for the story... You'll see that Infantino's art doesn't stray far from Hama's sketches.

Oh man, this one is fantastic!
As far as Marvel stories that were later canonized (is that a word?), The Starhoppers of Aduba-3 is amazing if only for the fact that it introduced Jaxxon, the green Lagomorph/Rabbit thing.

Canonized is a word. It most commonly comes up meaning declaring someone a saint (adding them to the Canon of the Saints) but using to refer to adding to any recognized canon of works is still legitimate.

True though something being "made canon" is the more usual term..

It's also worse noting that outside of fandom and Christianity (ie, the canonical books of the bible) canon generally refers to a body of works, and has little to do with continuity.

Didn't that planet turn up on Doctor Who a few months ago?

I swear, they copped this plot in one of the last Clone Wars episodes I saw, with Padme in place of Leia.

As for this comic itself, it was one of the first examples of a strong, clever female lead I ever read. Still great stuff!

Interesting how Leia made it clear that the droid is non sentient, most people in the Star Wars won't care if a sentient droid was destroyed, most people won't believe that a droid was capable of sentience.

I always saw it as the converse, how many NON sentient droids did we ever see? Artoo and Threepio are sentient, and there's no reason to think others in their series' are the same way. 1G-88 must be, to be able to do the job it does.

What I meant was most organics in universe don't see droids as people Leia is one of the few that does.

Good to have it confirmed (through the sketches) that this was originally drawn to have Leia with her Ep4 hairstyle.

This was one of the ones I had as a kid. Always loved this issue.

Right up there with "The Stenax Shuffle" as one of my favorites of the Marvel Run.
